I've had some interesting interaction with "spiritual advisors" doing readings next to my performance area. I am a passive individual with a highly controlled demeanor. It's very hard to rattle me, however recently a "psychic" didn't take very well to my audiences crowding her area. I tried my very best to keep folks corraled to the right of my area so as not to crowd the left side. The audience listened for a little bit, but eventually they went back to get a better view.
There happened to be four pyschics on the same sidewalk and only one of me. The following week one of the friendlier ones admitted that she was approached join in with the other three to put a "hex" on me. I know weird right? I actually enjoyed knowing that my hats were better that day versus not having the "hex". I'd like to hear some of your stories as it relates to psychics performing near your sets, both friendly and not. It is not my intent to flame them only to learn from other circumstances as it relates to interaction. I'm looking forward to hearing your stories, R2 |

Devious, I don't have a story to tell about psychics.
But I predict that if you don't find a roomier place to perform, there's going to be trouble if you stay where you are. But you already knew that, eh? Well, I think it will get worse. How easily can you get a pitch more distance away? I'm reminded of the time I had a place at an Artisan's Fair next to a stall selling art knick nacks that could easily get knocked over on the table there. Not being very savvy at the time, I used a diabolo and threw it in the air and it bounced near her wares. She gave me a warning about being careful of her goods. I figured that I should not literally upset the goods, or her, or be faced with paying for damage I caused. So I put more space between my diabolo throw and her wares.
The presentation makes the magic.

I do not busk myself but from my general experience in life, and from reading the two above posts, I am reminded that there will always be people around you that have a perpetual black cloud over their heads. Said people will always try and find ways to make those around them miserable as well. If not a 'black cloud of misery' then they will feel a need to constanty "remind" you of why you should not be doing what you are doing, that you need to be more careful or more considerate of others, why they know better/more than you do, etc.
This reminded me of a few years ago I was at a local, 3 day city fair just pausing for a moment outside the tent barrier to watch a band before going back to the model train club tent in which I was working. There was a beer resting on the ground in the grass against a support rope for a tent but I did not see it and just resting my arm on the rope knocked it over. I looked around and there was NOBODY even close to me at that point. So I picked up the bottle with a napkin and threw it away. Out of nowhere, some guy came in (not drunk, by the way) ranting about how I must be crazy to just throw a beer away that belonged to someone else, and how dare I do such a thing and what in the world was wrong with me? It did not go any further than that, but good grief! I think you just have to let things like the psychic bounce off of you, make the best of it and continue on. Just a little suggestion that may or may not work: If it is possible, try turning your table (or your body!) in the opposite direction so that your extreme right and left sides move, but you are still in the same spot. Make sense? |

I have never seen a group of psychics working together like that.
Which one is telling the truth, or do they all give exactly the same readings? If you can't find a better spot, be the first one there and rope off your pitch. No one owns the street. When threatened with paranormal retribution, a can of aerosol air freshener with a new label that says; HEX BEGONE should do the trick. Spray a little around you and you're good to go. Your mojoe is just as good as anyone else's.

I have dealt with a few psychics before. Never had an issue actually. They were quite friendly and we would even hang out and on the slow nights.

Pity the psychics didn't attempt to work out a mutually agreed on solution to the situation prior to their 'hexing' you. They sound like a mean spirited lot.
Pleased to continue finding that all the world's a stage.

The issue with the pyschics became a non-issue after a much needed massage from an apprentice of mine. He happens to be a reiki master, They practically begged him for one. He made them wait until the following day.. It didn't hurt that he has above average looks. They seemed almost giddy when we appeared yesterday. We also show up earlier now.

I thank you for the comment Ms. Merizing. Furthermore I'm happy to report, that once the pyschics establish a new client, they are sending us the rest of the family, whilst the reading ceremony is taking place. Yes, it's babysitting, but it encourages a new crowd to form. On a few occasions the psychic's client failed to leave a tip and we were tipped by the psychic as a gesture of goodwill. A nice symbiotic relationship has formed...nice hex eh?
In response to roping the pitch, I use a gold antique brass lion atop a smaller table directly in front of my performance table to discourage "first row" intruders. It has presence, so folks naturally don't approach closer than a few feet. This allows for folks in the cheap seats to view the table work. Peace, |

Use whatever space you have to best advantage, allowing for traffic flow and avoid getting busted for blocking a storefront. Real estate is scarce in some places. One time a girl with a guitar approached and asked me to move. She said she had been out of town for a few months but when she was here, this was ALWAYS her corner. "Yes, this is a good spot." I said and kept working. She didn't hang around long.

I'd like to know how many here rope off the pitch and how many don't with pro's and cons for each approach? That is an entirely new discussion...so perhaps I'll start a new thread.
