Great show as always. Can you guys tell us the length of the regal chain when you're wearing it? are those of us on the upper limit of the bell curve of human sizes going to be able to wear it?

Eye exam - nice, in the right circumstances. And if you've set it up right.
Transcendence - I disagree with D+C, the magic here is so strong it's worth the hassle and restrictions. This is a work of genius, really had me kicking myself about not thinking about it before. I already own this. Feels scary the first couple of times but once the confidence is there, it's great. As for the comments about "what if they do this, what if they do that..." - I've not had a problem. Bear in mind you have both of their hands "under control" as part of the routine. It's really no harder than the Jardine-Ellis ring thumb/silk trick, where you put the ring on their thumb. Also, you're moving the focus of attention around so it's hard for them to notice anything really. It's a great wham-bam coin routine, literally in their hands. There's that old Ammar piece that comes close in terms of amazement (the one that fooled Copperfield) but this is better imo, because (strangely) it's more practical than the Ammar method. Don't get me wrong, it's not the world's most practical effect, but it's a stunner. Regal Ring chain - Craig's gushing a little bit but there's no denying this is solid. I also already own this. The chain isn't examinable, but in context that's not a problem - they're just happy to get their ring back. But it's a great ending to a ring routine, very easy. Very nicely made. 99%? Not sure about that. 90% for sure though. Great show. Last week; nothing I'd use. This week; two things I already own. Looking forward to seeing the post-magic live and LADS shows. Should be a giggle. Oh - one last thing. Please don't wave the knife at the puppy. |

Mr. Quackenbush: I just measured mine; if a normal 25" chain will fit around your neck, with the chain hidden below your shirt at the front (as in Messrs. Penn and Regal's demos) then you're fine. The actual chain is 32" long, but 25" is the right 'circumference' measurement if you're curious about it fitting you. The chain must be tucked below your shirt at the front, as it is in the demos. If you can do that with a 25" chain, I'd say you're good to go. It's a nicely made item, and a great solution to the loading problem.

Thanks volto. I've noticed that Penn and Regal both had their shirts open to the second button. If that's a requirement, 25 inches would be too short for me as probably the only thing I could get away with at that length is a mock turtleneck of some kind. Is there any wiggle room in that size or if I replaced it with a longer chain for that component or had a jeweler add some links, would the gimmick still work or does it need to be that particular chain?

Mmm. Tricky. I think it's safe to say that the shirt must be 'open' at the top at least a little bit - though a stretchy turtleneck would probably work if you could widen the neck with your hands as you remove the chain. The crucial point is that the chain mustn't be visible at the front until you remove it. One of the methods Mr Regal teaches doesn't even require you to go into your shirt - although there are angle issues.
I think a good way to go at this point would be to ask Mr. Regal himself. Modifying the chain or using your own chain is certainly possible, but bear in mind it's gimmicked and made by a professional jeweller. It's not rocket science, but I imagine most folks wouldn't have the necessary equipment just lying around to make a chain exactly like this. You could jury-rig something similar easily, but this thing is comfortable and built to last - heat and sweat will not be an issue. You're wearing it next to your skin, so it needs to be reasonably well made. Best bet is to PM or email David Regal; he's here on the Café. The effect is worth the effort, especially if you already do a borrowed ring effect. The teaching on the DVD is excellent. |

Thanks for the info. I think I will do that, but it may mean I put off getting this for a while and pick up something else I've had my eye on instead. I have nothing but respect for David Regal, and particularly after this review the only reservation I had was the size. Not that it isn't always a problem with almost everything. I'm 6'5 and of sturdy scandinavian stock and any magic gimmick I buy I have to be careful about. Don't even get me started on the lengths I have gone through to find a TTs and PK gimmicks that fit properly and aren't garbage. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to respond.

Hi JF, or whatever your real name is, you giant Scandinavian man who makes me feel insignificant by comparison...
I'll do my best to answer your questions: As for the amount of buttons needing to be buttoned, as long as you can remove an actual chain (with a ring on it) from your shirt, you can do the effect. I often do it in a T-Shirt, which has no buttons but stretches a little at the top. But here's the curious thing... I came up with the ring chain partly because when I was a kid I had a trick called Ring-O. That was a great trick where a secreted ring slid down a small wand you held in your hand, went down a tassel at the end of the wand, then was stopped from falling off by a bead. The effect, however, was one of the ring simply appearing on the bead - you never saw the ring travel even though it was there to be seen! Similarly, you don't have to actually load the ring under the shirt for the ring chain to work. If you simply take the chain off, the ring will slide down to the middle in full view, but people just don't see it go. I know this sounds impossible, but it's true. If you just move the hands slowly forward, bringing the necklace closer to the audience for display, the ring sliding down becomes invisible. So, because of the above, the length issue is less of an issue. Obviously I used my best judgement when I picked a size for the chain. If you buy it from me and it's no good for you, I'll take it back and refund your money. All the best, David |

Thanks David for the very clear response. An offer like that sounds hard to pass by and I'll be ordering from you as soon as the commandant, er, misses approves the funds.
Regards, Jay

I am WOWING folks with Ringmaster and this would be a great kicker, but for now, the pool ball ending (which is really working for me) may have to do! |

Great show. I do think, however, that the Regal Ring Chain was the only effect worthy of consideration.
