Anyone know anything about this? Not sure, but maybe he's using the Fu Manchu table base. Thanks.

It is very visual, but unfortunate that it must be covered up before and after. I just feel that every audience member would have a reasonable idea as to the method being used, and that just kills it for me. If it could be resolved through routining more like Clearly Impossible, it would elevate the wow factor by 10.

Great concept, I really like the idea. Would like to see it taken to the next level.

Shimshi in V-The Ultimate Variety Show features this in his show, he does have it covered to begin with and takes it off as the kicker. Maybe that's where The Drake saw it. I just saw this a few weeks ago. Awesome show, unfortunately the magic was the weakest act.

I would like to see it without the cloth too. They could make the box no see thru at first and then remove the front for the sawing part. When you replace it you would only have to stand in front of the middle section for a moment while the dirty work is being done. My opinion. Great effect either way.

Patrick..
more than the middle section has a thing in it... It's really more like a Buzz saw.. but not on HER.. super clever! |

Mike,
I remember a similar idea to this from osborne plans called center cutting. This is why my mind was caught around the center portion. Thanks for setting me straight. I do believe that buzz saw is more correct. Patrick |

I think it is like center cutting. I have those plans too. But it has the addition of the fu machu base (isn't that the base concept he's using?) Also of course, he's using clear plastic for the boxes.

A few NO-CLOTH ideas:
If extra flaps were added, similar to the way a Mummy Case works then the black fabric "look" would be resolved. What if all the blades were stored on the front??? As each blade is removed, more of the assistant is revealed. There was also a slight problem in the adjustment of the hem, in her dress, before during and after. What might make this more workable would be to have the assistant wear a wide belt, which is removed as soon as she lays on the table THEN if there is any discrepancy in the way the fabric of the dress lays, it will be excused. The belt can then be passed through all the blade handles and used to remove all the blades at once (then they're put back on the front of the box). A side benefit to Her removing her belt (out the front) is that the audience "knows" that a belt surrounds the form leading them an image where her back is. There are even more ways to make the box - If the front was made of thin wood (or metal) 4 inch deep slats... this would obscure putting-on and taking off without any additional cover - - just tilt the box forward and the slats overlap each other and obscure the action/form. The top would need to be opaque but I don't think it makes any difference because the audience has their attention focused on the image through the slats. Battery powered CFLs would then be used inside the top/front of the box which allows the audience to see everything no matter what angle your house lights or spotlight tech was standing at. If anyone ever uses the slat idea, give me credit.

It was a bit artificial in parts, to be sure. He could have made it a bit more believable by adjusting the bottom hem of her dress before covering with the crystal box. The hem was messed up when he covered her, but perfectly even when he uncovered her.

Did I understand right? This is at a school, It looks like kids are sitting at their desks (on the left side of the video). It would be better for the assistant to use double stick tape then to have the magician put his hand on her thigh. - - - - - - - - - - True story: We once performed a Costume Trunk at a school and I was scolded, after the show "How dare you have a naked woman on the stage!". They thought there was a non-clothes wearing assistant in the trunk that managed to get dressed in the selected costume - in 2 seconds. Ultimately I agree with your assessment of the hem shifting (in the video).. this might have been alleviated if she placed her arms at her sides and pulled the dress into place before crossing her arms. And the mere fact that everyone seems to like the idea is good. It's fresh.

It's based on the periscope table sawing that Edmund Speer designed for David Bamberg (Fu Manchu). Bamberg used a "Pit and the Pendulum" theme for slicing through the center. All this person has done is applied Jonathan Pendragon's Clearly Impossible veneer to Speer's invention; however, similar to David Copperfield's Death Saw and Les Arnold's Crystal Sawing, almost total coverage of the girl is required at both ends of the routine. Jonathan's sawing is the only one to avoid this drawback.
