Ok, for a finale to my close up magicians act, I would like to produce my rabbit. My rabbit is a Netherland dwarf. I was wondering if anybody knew of somebody that manufactures a "rabbit bag" or something similar to a dove bag, but considerably larger. Something that I could steal off of the body with silks or the sort. I know I could probably make this myself, but I ain't really good with that kind of stuff and would prefer to buy one if anybody knows of somebody that makes one. Any ideas?

Abbott’s Magic used to make three different size of Rabbit bag. It is designed to hang from the back of a table or chair. However, I find that I can use the hook gimmick to hook the bag to my belt and do the steal in the same manner as a bottle production.
The artist formally known as Mumblepeas!

I found having the load on an assitants back works good. Go behind them and pick up the load as you do. Works good for a bunny in hat trick also.

I would suggest making your own.
I use a parphernalia. Its described in Tarbell Vol. 3, pg. #399. Once you have worked with it, Im sure you will come up with some alterations like I have. It seems that the Tarbell set is more than worth its money, there are allot of gems hidden there in print. MM

Brian,
Two things I wasn't told forty years ago about using rabbits in magic: 1. Do not hold them in a way that allows them to kick. They can slice your most expensive costume to rags with great pride. The rear feet cut like a knife. (My wife is a doctor. She can fix my leg, but not the costume.) 2. Trim their claws when necessary. They dig. Digging in your newest props is even more fun if it does extensive damage. Keeping it dark will help. Deal with the problems and enjoy them! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Brian,
Use Alan Shaxon rabbit production. It is the best rabbit from hat ever. For this method you need a simple bag for the rabbit, a light weight table, a foulard, and a top hat. Very snappy production. Have you wife, mom, girlfriend, or get a name from a fabric shop to sew your bag. Abbott's live stock bags are the best for production from silks. http://www.abbottmagic.com Email Greg Bordner the owner for details. |

Jack Gweyne had one loader that was published in the conjuror's magazaine. It was basically a cloth with 4 rings (one in each corner). The rabbit was place into the cloth the corners all held together.
In Gweyne's routine, the assistant carried it out and loaded it into a hat. The Abbott bag is a good bag. The Tarbell reference pretty much descirbes it. The most important thing is to give the rabbit something to rest his feet on so he feels safe. Speaking of netherland drawf rabbits, I still remember going into pet shops whenever Harry Blackstone came to town. I would try to fit (without the store people seeing me for fear of them complaining about hurting the rabbit) the rabbit into a quart jar. Of course, I would never injure a rabbit but the peta nuts don't always see things realstically.

HA... that's funny... I'm trying to get my dwarf conditioned to a small box prior to real production box.
Okay I just looked at my daughter's diaper bag. It has a flat bottom and a slit to obtain the diapers. I can't find a photo of a rabbit/dove bag on line but could a small diaper bag work to produce a rabbit? Thanks Wayne I'm trying to get my rabbit to stay in a black sheet held at all four corners. His head sticks out and he moves and wiggles until he can get his front paws out of the bag which causes it to tilt. Would it be better to tie the bag up completely with a ribbon so I could just untie it in the hat or something? Thanks Wayne

The bag is to small if he can reach the edge. I would not tie him in for 2 reasons. More difficult to get out and air supply for the rabbit.

Douglas Tilford has a whole set up. A little magician man table with a star table top. It has a nail in the back of the table which the rabbit bag hangs from. The bag is spandex materisl with several loops in it.
You turn the top hat over and grab bag then flip hat over while grabbng bag. Rabbit production!!! I'll sell mine. Beuause I use a 3D bunny box now.

Sapolice,
This is an open forum and not within the secrets section of the Magic Café. Therefore, I do not want to expose too much here. If you will PM me or email me I will tell you how I handle the rabbit bag problem in our stage show. At the end of a large silk production Lucy and I produce a very large and heavy New Zealand doe from the silks. By the way, congratulations! I saw on the news this week that your city is in the top five best places to live in the USA. Not a bad piece of news! Bob Bob@magicbysander.com |

When you put a bunny in the bag (gives a whole new meaning to bunny boiling ; boil in the bag) Make sure the ears are OUT of the bag. The rabbit feels more comfortable. Were are you from Brian? if your in the UK I can get very nice rabbit bags. It has been a while so have you got one yet?
