Once again, really great videos Greg! For a beginner like me this is gold!

I have a question about the ”YetAnotherVanish” clip. There is a bit, just before the final production, where you open your hand slightly to allow the spectator to see that it is still empty. You then close the hand and then open again to show that the coin has now appeared. I really like this little touch, but was worried that the a spectator might work this bit of the sequence out. Perhaps I am just being paranoid and one could always put in a little time misdirection. I was curious thought to hear people’s thoughts.

Otherwise the routine is very smooth! When you bring the coin out of the first concealment you look so relaxed. This is, in my opinion, otherwise a very unnatural move, which also draws attention to where the coin might have been. But you did it smoothly and on an off-beat. The fact that we also get to see so much of your hands after the recovery from the concealment also serves to allay suspicions.

I feel that I am learning a lot from seeing these clips!

Greg,

The vanishes look very good.

You are one of the few people I could say this to... ( below )

Do you have any longer routines that involve vanishing coins? There is one that is the 'milestone' in coin work, called 'John Ramasy's Cylinder and Coins'. It is a version of the 'Cap and Pence'. To make this routine work... four or more coins need to vanish, and later reappear. There is a vanish/reappear method in the published version that was very personal to John Ramsay. You might enjoy the challenge of managing four coins ... one at a time.

Since I got my education in coin magic from the likes of David Roth and Geoff Latta... and asked the NY gang about lots of moves... I will not comment on originality or crediting for the moves you are doing. Magic with coins has a 500+ year written history and folks like Downs, Buckley ... published all kinds of moves. More recently folks like Sol Stone, Harvey Rosenthal and Geoff Latta have published work in the area as well. What you are doing looks good.

Regards

Jonathan

Wow did you guys see Gone! Smile

Grostami go buy Bobo's. It'll help you out a whole lot.

I didn't think I needed it. Then I went and bought it and realized the errors of my ways.

Hi,

The Torres move is mentioned a couple of times in this thread but does anyone have a source for that other than the David Stone videos? I would like to buy the Stone stuff eventually - but on DVD, if and when it appears. In the mean time, I would like to find out a little more about one or two of Greg's moves - most of them I have source material for (if only I could do them as well as Greg!!!) but the Torres move eludes me.

Hello to my funk soul brothers,

Once again many many thanks to all the words of praise . . . You guys make me BLUSH!! A special thanks to cardguy.

I just got back from Vegas. I had the great pleasure of meeting the amazing Apollo Robins . . . I gotta tell you guys; it's a very humbling experience seeing someone as polished as Apollo, perform a symphony only with his fingers and a few coins. Apollo's mixture of magic and pickpocketing has brought a new excitement to magic that I haven't felt in a loooong time.

For those of you who have been waiting for Bob Kohler's Hold Out . . . I gotta tell you guys, it'll knock your socks off!! It's worth every penny. Everything about it BLEW ME AWAY. Bob was kind enough to show me some previews of his up and coming magic products . . . Wow!! All of them are top notch.

One of the interesting things that Apollo and I discussed was how Shoot had taken a little inspiration from Jeff Chambers' performance of NoColor. I've been doing NoColor for the last 8 years . . . and I'm really glad that Bob Kohler was there to back me up when I said that to Apollo.

So to answer FullEffect . . . I showed Jeff Chambers NoColor . . . (next time you see Jeff, ask him!) and I've been flattered by how well Jeff performs these sleights, and his innovative new twists. But, I still perform NoColor, the same way I did 8 years ago. I'm not saying that I invented these sleights . . . I'm just saying I put them together in that order.

NoColor came from the desire to achieve a real coin vanish. A real coin vanish is simple to explain . . . one moment the magician is holding a coin at his fingertips and the next moment it's gone! So I knew I couldn't just make the coin go puff!! Soooo, I started playing with the fastestp way of going into an E*** GR** . . . that led me to "my" version of E*** GR**. I knew I had to do it in one hand, and I had to do it with only a second of cover. The next phase was how do you show the rest of the hand empty. That led to the development of a sequence of concealments that I now call NoColor.

Many of you have asked about the use of Ramsey's subtlety for the quick flash of an empty hand before the final reproduction. I have to give credit to my best friend Zareh Gorgian, for showing me this amazing subtlety . . . don't underestimate how powerful this is to laymen. In one of my routines I use Dean Dill's coin reproduction at the fingertips from one of his amazing matrix routines.

To answer Jonathan, I would love to show you guys my longer coin routines, I just have to find a camera man to follow my actions. As far as the 'John Ramsey's Cylinder and Coins' routine you mentioned . . . I've never heard of it, but I'm always up for a challenge.

your humble servant,

Greg Rostami

Greg,

In addition to pointing me towards a source for the Torres move, I don't suppose you would care to give me some hints/tips/point me to some source reading for the GOD vanish clip!

Perhaps I am missing something (clearly I am!!!) but with all the other clips I can just about figure out the moves (no... I didn't say I coulde SEE them!), But the GOD vanish is the one I simply cannot figure out

Too bad you didn't ask that quesiton when you visited Bob Kohler... that is one of his pet routines - he has one of the best versions around.

John Carney has a DVD that will be available soon that covers his handling of C&C. Or you can read it right in his book Carneycopia.

Greg, I watched and I got fooled .... Thankyou Smile One of the things your clips brought back to me is the idea of using combinations of concealments and keeping the coin moving to make your hands look incredibly empty. You do this very well ... especially when you pull the coin out from the camera's ear - that kills me Smile
Cheers,
David

Awesome stuff! Unfotunately (probably because of video quality) I could see a flash on the last one. But la-di-da, because looking at all of your stuff as a whole, you are an excellent coin worker and I'm sure real-world stuff is so much better. Can I be selfish and request that you put up a full blown routine? I really like your style and presentation. It wouldn't work for me per se, but it is very refreshing. Keep up the good work!

When seated, some of those techniques lend themeselves well to work with a servante. Bob Fitch and I compared notes on that placement stuff in a Howard Johnson's under Tannen's over twenty (20) years ago. His touch is more 'dance' while mine is more direct.

In either case, bring your hands down from chest to waist level can be done 'in routine' and have the desired effect on wise acres. Again, here is the challenge... do this with several coins one after the other. Such is what seperates the 'men from the boys'.

David Roth used to vanish all the props from the table, including the chop cup... then stand up from the table in session. That too was done twenty years ago. So, anyone want to stand up to the challenge and improve on the technolgy of vanishing things? I'm eager to discuss with those who have results.

I just call it NoColor!! It's a combination of a lot of moves . . . Sorry about being a little secretive . . I'm going to be selling some of my coin routines on the internet, so I don't want to let out the secrets yet.

take care,
Greg

Greg, those vanishes are great!

I especially enjoy the presentations on your video clips. You don't just perform some dry effects; you include your personalilty.

Very inspirational for a coin newbie like me.

Thank you for helping me with this Greg. I now perform this for my friends and use it in my coin vanishing routine as a finisher (I can't drop the coin in a shirt pocket for a complete vanish yet). People are amazed by this. I slowly open my hand they think it is in, then they just know it's in the other and I open my other hand. I look around acting as if it really did vanish then I just bring it back.
