You'll find a brief discussion of Bart Harding's stack in my essay on Full-Deck Stacks, which you can read on-line at The Deceptionary. Go to the "Information" section.

Doug, Thank You for the link. I had no idea about it. I have just looked at it and plan to go back right now and really get into it. Tony

I was re-introduced to the Bart Harding stack. There is a bit of mathematical calculation but if numbers are your thing then it is excellent. It will stand up to a lot of scrutiny. It is very good for both findig the position of a named card AND knowing the card at a named position.

Whilst the Bart Harding Card System is generally reckoned to be one of the better ones, I still don't think you can beat a memorised deck (i.e. where you know the position of each card instantly), and it really isn't as hard as you think!

This is a false dichotomy. Any arrangement of cards can be memorized, thus creating a "memorized deck". And there are strong arguments for using an algorithmic stack like Harding's as the basis for doing exactly that. There is a lengthy discussion of this issue in my previously-mentioned essay on Full-Deck Stacks (which can be read on-line at The Deceptionary (in the "information" section).

This whole idea that am algorithmic stack is somehow different from a memorized deck is quite popular, and quite wrong.

Mark, with a purely memorised stack, how easy is it to know the position of a card if it is named as opposed to the name of a card is a position is named?
