Another Zig-Zag photo. This one appeared in the Owen Magic Supreme catalog. I believe that is Gertrude Smith in the box. A denim-clad Harry Anderson looks on in amazement. (odd to see Harry out of character , not dressed in his vintage 1940's wise-guy clothing).
This one is decorated correctly, without any chrome strips on the front of the cabinet. ![]() |

I performed the Zig-Zag with audience participation and a costume change at the end for many, many years. I had George Kimberly of Chalet Magic build one that didn’t break down into pieces. Just one unit, with detachable base and shelf, that fit into a big ATA case. It took 5 - 10 minutes max to set up and tear down. Audiences loved it, and I loved performing it.

The Owen model isn't decorated correctly. The sides should be black so the vertical black blends into it thus minimizing it. I agree about no chrome strips.

Makes for a three-stage impact: puzzle-wonder-surprise. They puzzle at the blades going through. Then they wonder as the center is shifted. And you hit them with a surprise at the end. Many performances end up just being a puzzle which leaves a lot of value on the table. |

I was reacting positively to the absence of the chrome strips on the front , which is usually the most blatant flaw I see in Zig Zag cabinets. Here is another photo Robert Harbin performing his illusion, the Zig Zag Girl, at the Eighth Annual Academy of Magical Arts Awards Banquet (held at the Beverly Wilshire Ballroom, March 13, 1976). In Genii magazine, Bill Larsen wrote of Harbin's performance that evening:
"Finally the piece de resistance of the evening ... the first Los Angeles appearance of the fantastic ROBERT HARBIN and he didn't disappoint. In fact,he was in sensational form, working on the dance floor in front of the band with cigarette manipulation, his famous paper tear, a new (to us) suspension, and the original ZIG-ZAG in which he was assisted by Diana Zimmerman. A grand act and the perfect ending to a wonderful evening." ![]() |
