I really can't see why anyone would feel negative about Dynamo. I really can't. he's a top level, top class, close up magician who has grafted and worked hard to achieve what he has achieved. He's an all round decent guy, down to earth, real and approachable. Magic would be much better off with more guys like Dynamo. All of my magician friends think he tops too! Give the kid credit where it is due. He's good, very good and at the moment he's hot!
I say the best of luck to him and I if I can get to be anywhere near as good as him I will be very happy.

Nah, I can be as big an *** as anybody, but I do try to keep him in check when performing.

Andrew hit the nail square on the head as he often does when making comments on topics such as this. I haven't seen Dynamo yet I haven't even heard of him till seeing something about this thread a bit ago. I will watch the video later when I have more time. Well I like him I have no clue yet. Even if I don't no reason to sit at my computer and bash him on the Café or anywhere else for that matter. I don't care for David Blaine or Chris Angel but I don't go around slamming them every chance I get either. I can't say I haven't talked bad about them here and there. But I don't make it a habit.

Good for Dynamo. It's not like he came from nowhere. He was working hard trying to get contacts when I was back in England around 7 years ago, and even then he was getting in with the music crowd and getting himself some representation. He even briefly put out a magic magazine. I was one of probably many he came to for advice, (thought I had little to offer).
It's funny how those that work the hardest at it seem so lucky:) Let's not begrudge anyone their moment in the spotlight. Who knows, you might be next. Paul. |

Never heard of him. But if he found himself an audience, and isn't giving away methods to bolster his reputation and put other working magicians out, than best of luck to him. He found a niche that works for him, and all the best to him.

Dyanamo has a TV show? Is it in the states, have been out of the country for 6 months. I don't really care for him, but I agree I wouldn't put him down during a performance. He's doing his thing, I'm doing mine. I would also never mention camera tricks. That is still a negative toward him.
I have been thinking about this lately (after seeing the cellphone in bottle.) When a magician says there are no camera tricks, could he be using camera tricks? Is it any different than saying, this is a normal deck of cards (when it isn't) or I will loose your card in the deck (while controlling it to the top)?

You know what I would love to see? Everyone that is complaining about Dynamo have people gripe about them in public just as one ones on this thread are doing "Hey did you see Immaculate Conception Finklestein's magic show up the street last night?" "Yeah he sucks what a pig!" How would you like it if people were bad mouthing you? It's fine to not like Dynamo like I said it's possible I won't like him when I do watch something on him but I'm not going to complain about it like the ones here are.

Of course magicians in the UK are complaining about Dynamo and sick of him.
He's a successful, effective and popular performer. It's almost like a reflex response for the average British magician. They try and smother their envy by feeling aggrieved and expressing their resentment. Please people, putting someone else's success down does not bolster your own standing it just makes you look and sound rather pathetic. Even if his performing style isn't to your personal liking why would any performer try to belittle both the performer and (in doing) the audience who has expressed their liking and admiration for him by claiming not to have heard of him when in fact they have? Someone else being successful has no bearing on what or how you as an individual are doing. Your own achievements are going to be entirely up to you. I'm not suggesting that you have to like Dynamo or outright agree with whatever opinion your audience expresses.... but isn't it better to acknowledge your audiences experiences? There are plenty of ways of doing this without outright agreeing with them but also without showing a sour grapes attitude. (EG: "well that phone in the bottle trick he does is certainly crazy and fantastic.... but rather than show you something you've already seen I've got own signature trick which I really think you're going to enjoy and which is going to blow you away"... or whatever way suits your manner and style) Of course some people aren't going to like Dynamo (I, for instance, personally don't particularly care for his style of performing).Maybe you do or maybe you don't. Just bear in mind if no one has reason to dislike a performer there's a good chance that they are probably bland and uninteresting. Dynamo has a distinctive style and manner. The same thing that puts some people off him is exactly the same thing that has helped him gain the amazing success that he currently enjoys. So next time you feel your lack of self worth trying to bubble to the surface when some asks, "Can you put a mobile phone in a bottle like Dynamo?", don't show yourself up as an a*sehole. Acknowledge both the spectators sense of awe and the performer and effect that created it. Then use that as a springboard to allow yourself to engage them. That way next time they encounter a magician rather than talking about Dynamo they will hopefully be taling about the unbelievable bit of magic that they not only saw but directly experienced you perform for them. Viewed this way Dynamo's success (along with any other effective magician they may have seen) only acts to reinforce your own performance. You should be thanking him rather than being sick of hearing of him.

I'd make three comments.
First - what we say to lay people is one thing. My take is that businesses that criticise their competitors as 'cowboys' do a disservice to their industry. Second - what we say to each other on forums like this. Well, I think honesty is valid. This isn't a question of bad mouthing success. I have the highest regard for successful performers like Paul Daniels and Deren Brown. But here, while undoubtedly there is some good stuff, I think there is way too much material which relies on camera tricks and stooges. Frankly, I think this does our business a disservice. For two reasons; there is no way we 'real' magicians can produce equivalently strong effects; but also, as youtube exposure grows, people will become less distrustful of TV magic. So everyone loses. But third - I'd add that I used to have a girlfriend who was a very good, but amateur, soprano singer. Meeting with her and musicians after concerts and listening to them badmouth successful artists made me want to scream "Yes, but they've made it!" I'm aware my points 2 and 3 contradict each other. |

Today's Dynamo count at the gig was about 10 people. The biggest surprise to me is how many people watch the sattelite channels!

First impressions and all that...
I had the misfortune to meet him in Davenports in London some time ago. He was on the verge of celebrity then after some TV work in the UK. But, he behaved like a d*&^ and needed a good wash if I'm honest. Can't bring myself to watch him - but that's more to do with the fact that I can't stand watching magic on TV (at any level) than my distatste for him. I hope he's grown up and learned something about self-presentation - but I'm doubting it... I'm leaning to agreement with a comment made above that its nice to see someone make a success - just a shame it wasn't any of the others in the field at the time! |
