While were on the subject of concerts, I'm sure we've all attended one of two
concerts where a surprise music artist joined the headling group for a song or two. What was the concert you saw and who was the surprise artist? Back in the early 90's I saw an R.E.M. concert in Ann Arbor in which Patti Smith, who was living in Detroit at the time, joined the band for a couple songs. One was heres and the other was theirs. The other good one I saw was a John Mellencamp concert at Pine Knob and Bob Seger came on and did a few songs with the group. Those are always fun concerts to see.

Well this isn't quite the same but anyway, last summer there was a two week revival of Paul Simon's musical, The Capeman, performed in Central Park's outdoor theatre. In the middle of one of the numbers it became apparent that one of the broadbrim-hatted, Guayabera-shirted, onstage musicians was Mr. Simon who took a guitar solo.

I saw Black Sabbath (Dio singing on the tour, but Rob Halford sang that night) open for Ozzy. There was a lot of feuding between Ozzy and Sabbath after he left, for many years. Unbeknownst to any of us, Bill Ward (original Sabbath drummer) was backstage (he didn't play in Sabbath's set). After Ozzy's set, the original Sabbath came out...Ozzy singing, Iommi & Geezer Butler on guitar and bass, and Bill Ward on drums...and played three songs. That was something I never, ever thought I'd see.

I wasn't there in person but on one of the Dropkick Murphy's live cd/dvd's the Mighty Mighty Bosstones come out at the end and tear up "Shipping up to Boston" with them. That's the track I've listened to right before the Highland Games for the last 2 years to psych myself up.

That's a rockin' song. I dig the Dropkick Murphys.

At a U2 concert (PopMart tour) a drunk local got on stage. After a bit of chatting, Bono handed him his guitar and the guy played a creditable second guitar part to Staring at the Sun. 'course it happened in other cities too, making the identity of the "drunk local" a bit murky.

At the second night of Paul McCartney's show at Yankee Stadium (On the Run Tour), Billy Joel came out, completely unexpected. Everyone went crazy for 5 minutes before they were able to sing I saw her standing there. Was anyone else at that concert?

It was actually a surprise concert. John Fogerty played during halftime at a Chiefs/Broncos game on Thanksgiving a few years ago. We didn't have any idea he was going to perform. We were too busy deciding on beer and eats for tailgating...

I had a similar thing happen at the NHL ALLSTAR game here in Atlanta a few years ago.
The Hives came on and did a few songs. Complete surprise.
