Ah,this morning, as I was typing in a couple of "Busker Jokes", my eyes spied a new Thread,...."Busking, what does it literally mean", posted by Devious. ohh. a slow deep breath. uhh. the nostrils flaired,... slightly. ahhh, "let´s talk!", I thought.
But, I´m in the middle of painting my truck,... and I´ve got to get it inspected,... and the road, it beckens,.., as does the bank. So, first the work, then the cream. The whole day, though,... "ahh, what is Busking?",.. should I answer clearly? economically? or,..? The day done,... no runs,.. back upstairs,.. two kisses and a pinch; I finally sit down and push the button,.. the box is on. AHHH(!),... "Busking,... literally"(!),.. what a ****. I thought we were going to get Philosophical here. Romantic,... Passionate!,... "Literally(!)",.. blaaa. anyway, after a whole day of painting,.. sniffing those glorious fumes, I´m going to post it, if anybody asked for it or not! Busking. It´s definatly got to do with "the unexpected". The unexpected stage. An audience, unexpecting. The Show, unpredictable,... the weather. Busking is saying, "Stop this everyday rush, just for a moment. It´s Showtime!" Busking is an island in the "banal canal". Busking is taking a chance,... both sides. Facing the audience and saying, "Thanks for giving me the chance. That was my best in this moment." Busking has a certain nakedness about it. Busking is that `laughing voice´ who asks, "I wonder if you could do a Show over there?",... busking, is the `crazy ear´ that hears the voice. It´s having a hot Show,... and everybody loves you. It´s flopping, with the same Show, a half hour later,.. and nobody wants to know you. Busking is a blessing for those who carry it, honour it,... feed it, eat it, breathe it. ,.. a curse for those who push it. Busking tickles, tantilizes, tames the strongest, tempts the weakest. Busking is hearing; "Can you live from it?",... and answering, "I life BECAUSE of it." tomorrow, I´ve got to start piecing the whole truck back together,..... good night folks, gallagher hayes |

Your post was very profound Mr. Hayes. I'm very humbled that you took some time off the paint job, to post your thoughts. I used to huff paint when I was a cholo in my barrio back in the day...I kid, I kid. I couldn't afford it.
Israel p.s. I do believe that you meant, "I live BECAUSE of it" instead of "Life", just a typo right? I'm not the grammar police, but I could use a second job, what with the economy these days eh? Peace and my Props to you my carnalito |

Actually I like how he used the word 'life' as a verb. Sort of like 'I heart New York'.
By using life as the verb, it's as if he is saying his whole life/spirit/existence is dependent on street performing. |

I really like gallagher's perceptions on busking which, to us full-timers, is a lifestyle unlike any other.
Meet you in Busker Alley

OK, the truck is pretty much back together, that´s relieving,.... tuesday´s Inspection,... then comes `the pack-up´,... next weekend... we´re out.
I have to admitt, I was hoping for a little more passionate testimony,.. but I guess it was just one of those Posts where everybody simply agreed with everything! (OK. Devious did catch my typo,.. I was spouting "live", as my fingers were thinking "Life". I was probably a bit emotionally hyperventilated in the moment. By the way Devious, only one other person calls me "Mr. Hayes",... my mother,.. so you´re in good company.) If you want to get visitors, dive into an all important Project, with a pressing deadline,.the whole world will stop by your doorstep. That happened last night. In the middle of late night screwing around, under the truck; two old alleyway-artists knocked on the door,... asking where the next good Italian restaurant is,... in a village of 600 folkies,.... hmm. After about three plates of spagetti, I got around to telling them of my `credo´ on the internet. "Are the Poets gone?,... the Dreamers all dried up? Did the times change, and I missed it? We all have such cutsie `signatures´." "Ha!", my friends laughed. "Dreamers,... Poets? Buddy, the only thing older then you and your truck and your ideas,... are dinosaurs. And they´re extinct!" (i´m glad they left my wife out of this,.. she´s two years older then i,.. and not so good spirited, after three plates of spagetti, and the wine required to wash it down.) hmm, I listened in Jimmytalksalot´s interview, how he mentioned filling "tired",.. "maybe it´s a younger boy´s game now". The small show, with the accoustic guitar and `own song´,... ain´t playing for the pennys any more. The Juggler with three balls, five hundred patterns, and a line of rhyme can´t tickle an interest today. Bigtime Busking, is lining up and waiting for a Pitch,... or `auditioning´,... ("ha!") The bottomline, is the number at the end. naaaa! No way! We´re rolling out next Sunday. An old truck with new tires. We´re heading south,...north across Germany, down the Rhein to the bottom corner of the country,... every little dinky town in between. We´ll keep you posted.,... we´re probably going to end up in Sweden. give it easy, gallagher |

Good luck, Germans are notorious for being very cheap. In fact I recently met a german girl who told me this is true. I hope you can get them to tip...

Oktober 3er,.. con´t, (if you haven´t already, please read my open synopsis. thanks.)
I wasn´t really sure if I would "stay in touch" or not. There really wasn´t much interest,..on either side. Street Performing has gone in a different direction since I first step on the curb, and many of my experiences are outdated,... probably obsurd(!). I guess, this was the demanding factor,... I´ll share it,... Show it. Let folks know how we go about it,... not neccasarily this BEST way. Before I get going, I´ve got to say, there are some really good folks out there; pushing and preaching and practicing other `techniques´. ALL of them have merit. ALL of them. The one Truth, that took me years to understand, is that "the Streets" have many different corners, twists, and turns. Nothing definate. That´s their beauty. An Open Stage, for all. Characters involved: http://flic.kr/p/4Khe2V Gallagher Hayes and `slo-foot´ Mo A Preview of what I hope to share: The Road,.. http://flic.kr/p/astvMX http://flic.kr/p/aswaL1 http://flic.kr/p/astxMT Friends and Stories: http://flic.kr/p/astKhi http://flic.kr/p/aswiAA http://flic.kr/p/aswihq http://flic.kr/p/astxcz http://flic.kr/p/aswhRw I guess it all starts with the family, though. http://flic.kr/p/astKPg Rebecca, Melissa, and Moritz. Two of them were born ` on the road´. All of them sharpened pencils in the waggon, to pull off their Home Schooling. (Rebecca is working on her Doctorate in Archeology. Melissa is first semester Psychology. Moritz,.. still sharpening pencils in the waggon.) Before we hit the road, we work on one waggon, each year. This year, `the truck´ was due. The great thing about pausing from playing and doing something totally different, is the freshness with which you re-enter the Streets. Also, coming out of `routine´ opens a lot of new visions. The Truck: a 1959 Magirus Deutz firetruck. We´ve been friends for the past 20 years. She drinks a bit. She grumbles a bit,... on cold mornings. She´s slow walking up the hills. ,...we get along pretty good. http://flic.kr/p/astA4r http://flic.kr/p/asw8c9 http://flic.kr/p/astC1g http://flic.kr/p/astv5i http://flic.kr/p/astAFt http://flic.kr/p/astBfc http://flic.kr/p/astCqx http://flic.kr/p/astCRk http://flic.kr/p/astznB Hitting the road, after a pause, no matter how many years you´ve rolled it,.... the nerves shake. There´s so many little details to settle,.. so many "excuses" NOT to play,... http://flic.kr/p/aswkWy http://flic.kr/p/aswhs3 http://flic.kr/p/astt3D http://flic.kr/p/asw7CY ,but the time comes,.. you go for it. My blessing, thru the years, is, being able to share `the push´. http://flic.kr/p/aswmrm http://flic.kr/p/astJpc The Show. Well, after looking at the photos, most will probably think,.. if not say, "the boy ain´t doing things right. Develope a circle. Bring `em closer.,.... LOCATION!! ..." hmm, there´s many different corners,... we´ve have a philosoohy about what we´re doing,.. a little bit of thought put into the way we´re doing it. I don´t want to fill your ears up with my "Golden Wisdom",.. I´ll let it for another time. There are many alleyways leading leading home,..... http://flic.kr/p/astFb4 http://flic.kr/p/astyFc http://flic.kr/p/astGor http://flic.kr/p/aswhbQ god,.. that took a bit more time than I thought would! I´m going to TRY and share more stories and thoughts and photos, as we roll on. I´ll try to get a bit more into the `Magic´ aspect of our Show,... and other Magicians out here. There are lots of really great performers out there,... lots here in the Café. I´m going to try to show what they´re DOING,.. not just saying. Thanks for the patience. Thanks for looking(!). Hope to see you someday, in person,.. along the trail. gallagher. |

It's funny how you can go back a few days or weeks later and read into things. from a new perspective, based upon a new frame of reference that didn't exist before. Thank you Mr. Tim Friday as well as Mr. Gallagher Hayes. |
