Nothing new here. We've been hearing these complaints for years now. How the show is tired and David just more or less walks through it. I really think he needs to take a year or three off to recharge himself.

I'm a DC fan, but NOT a fan of showing a lot of video in a live show, which he's fond of doing. While it's true you hear a lot about him walking thru the show these days, if he replaced the 20 minutes of video which some actual material - my guess is his audience rating would skyrocket. Paying DC prices to watch video can't hep but make most feel ripped off.

While I was at the world magic seminar I went to see the Copperfield show. There was a video to open the show but it was about 7 minutes and has some quite funny parts in it. It was well received by the audience. He followed it with the shadowbox/motorcycle appearance.
It was definitely a different show than I expected. The MGM theatre isn't that large and you don't get that huge stadium feel. Instead you get more of a feeling that you and a small group are getting a private show from DC. I think he plays it like that as well. He seems quite relaxed in his presentation like he's performing for friends. There was lots of audience interaction you wouldn't see in a stadium setting. Granted there was a video mid way through of his straight jacket escape that I would have preferred something live over but that time could have been used backstage to set something I guess. He does a lot of the big effects and how they pull it off on a small stage still amazes me. I wasn't expecting a lot after reading the reviews but was pleasantly surprised. It was a full house and the audience gave DC two standing ovations at various times during the show. Don't worry to much about David. Some new exciting stuff has been in the works for some time now. Stay Tuned. |

So ,
what do you think about the peoples who wrote all that bad rewiews ? are rights or not? here for shure ( included me) I can see only positive rewiews about him, but of course for us DC is DC ! anyway his audieces seem to be and have a totally opposite point of wiews from our, and unfortunately for him they are the real neutral Audience and not us ! |

Another thought. 99.99999% of all magicians are not subject to criticism on sites like tripadvisor, citisearch, yelp, etc. If they were, the general public would probably have a much lower opinion of magic than they do now. Another thing to think about. Of the teeny-tiny percentage of magicians who are well enough known to be rated on these sites, there isn't a single one who doesn't get some negative comments.

I remember seeing David Copperfield when I was very, very young. Couldn't have been more than 6 or something. I was actually terrified by the show, because I really believed that he had been cut in half and then just stuck back together or something. I believe he was playing at Ceasar's Palace at the time. After the show, my parents took me to get an autographed photo of him. When he signed the photo, I got really upset, because I didn't know what an autograph is and I thought he had "scribbled" on my picture. My blood pressure went up, my nose started to bleed, and my poor mother had to deal with a screaming, bloody child in the middle of a Vegas Casino.
I haven't seen him since, but I really want to see him again from the perspective of an adult. When you think about it, its pretty cool that he's had such a long stage career. As a plus, judging from the reviews, the show probably hasn't changed much, so I can really gauge how my response to the illusions has changed over time! |

Dahih, the effect with the barrel that you referred to was called 'Back cracker' (at least, that's what David called it). It was created by Andre Kole, and was in the show for a very short time several years ago.

I make a good portion of my annual income as a direct result of my reviews on TripAdvisor. While there are some people that enjoy writing negative reviews most are giving their honest opinion. The last several times I saw DC he acted very tired and I agree that for the money they spend they would like to have more. I grew up wearing out the DC specials daily on recorded VHS but to most of these folks he is just another magician!

I think you get more complaints on those sites than anything. If people are mad they look for a place to vent. So sites like this get used for that purpose. Rarely do people who like stuff feel the need to express it the same way. So you don't get as many positive posts as negative ones.
That said, I saw the opening video when it was longer and spoke with Chris about it and he said that they were still tweaking it. Since then, it has been shortened considerably. It has some very funny spots in it and they use it to build anticipation for the first illusion. The middle of the show is usually a video as well, and is at the point where one would usually have an intermission. This is the perfect time for someone to use the restroom etc. And it allows the backstage crew to set up for the second half of the show which usually has bigger illusions. They break down the opening of the show and bring in the back half. This also allows DC to take a break. If you have ever been onstage talking and working for an hour and a half, you know you can get quite tired and thirsty! And the people saying that he needs to update his illusions are obviously other magicians. They see his show year after year every time he comes to town. They don't have a realistic outlook on what it takes to run a show of this size. It goes on tour every year and plays on a stage 2-3 times a day almost everyday. Changing routines just isn't as easy as it seems. Anyway, just my 2 cents. PS...who are these people taking there kids to Vegas? What do they do when the people on the street hand out those nudie cards? |

I went to the show with The Drake and it was truly an enjoyable experience. It really did feel like a private show. It had been changed from the touring version, refreshingly so, and included a new bit as well. At least I think it was new. Whatever the case, that bit showed David is a master storyteller.
Its a fact that everybody in any given audience will not love every bit of the show. The thing is, you will read two negative reviews of the show while there was 690 people in the audience that liked it and didn't write a positive review. There just are a lot of people who love to gripe and they always feel they must tell everybody how offended they were or how rudely they were treated. I don't think David has anything to worry about.

I really like to see back cracker performed. It couldn't be so bad that it was removed from the show only after 1 year
