Which Double Lift are you learning? The first one I learned was in Harry Lorayne's Close-Up Card Magic (where his Ambitious Card routine is taught). There is also a great double in The Card Magic of Paul Lepaul. If you don't have these books, I suggest buying them.

I set with cards in my hands each night watching tv practicing dl, palming and false cuts. I find that practicing basic moves that way is faster and I'm learning in such a way so that I'm not constantly burning my own hands while doing them, so that in performance I can look at the spec while doing the move and it feels natural. It took me about a year to get a good reliable strike dl down.

I'm not one to use gimmicks with cards, but WOW 2.0 is probably the only one that I throw in there on occasion. It's a great trick and has tremendous impact. However, the teachings on that DVD for basic sleight of hand moves is pretty bad. In fact, the way they talk about losing the card is ridiculous. Learn to do an overhand shuffle and the basic double lift and you'll be golden for this trick.
If you never bought a beginner's card book, go with either Royal Road To Card Magic or Card College volume 1. After that, you'll really see how good you can do the WOW 2.0 trick even better than the way it's taught on the DVD. |

Many (I mean really - "many") think that my book, Close-Up Card Magic, is one h*ll of a card book for beginners, metaljohn.

Some very good advice here, but I would add this. I have known a few people that were just starting out and they were nervous as well. I suggested to them and I suggest to you as well that you learn some self working tricks. Scarne on Cards has some very powerful effects that are all self working. Once you learn these and can do them without much thought you can concentrate on interacting with the people. This can be a great aid in building confidence and will allow you to breathe easier as you perform. Just start with a couple tricks and don't try to do a half hour performance on your first few times out. Just do three or four tricks and then stop. Leave them asking for more, but don't continue. Then take time to really evaluate how the effects went over, what the reactions were and how you felt performing them.
Finding alternatives to hard sleights is ok, but should probably come later in the process. I would also suggest you stay away from gimmicks. As you learned, some if not all demand as much skill as a sleight. They also have the added concern of failing on you at the worst possible time and until you have more experience you will be stuck without a way of getting out of the situation. What we commonly refer to as an "out". The important thing is to progress along the right steps. Don't try to get ahead of yourself or you may find yourself frustrated with your own efforts. Magic is a wonderful journey and every step you take can open new wonders to you. If you run too fast you will miss them and that would be sad. Kingman |

I can't endorse Harry's Classic collection enough. And Ed is right, everybody flubs one once in a while, even Harry (and believe me no one can recover from a flub better than Harry. When he flubs the trick turns out even better. Must have had a lot of practice.) But the DL Harry and djurmann recommend above is both easy to learn and master. Just practice it a bit to get confident with it. I've used it for many many years without problems or ever getting caught.

The only reason I didn't mentioned yours was mainly out of my own experience. The first two card books I ever read were the ones I mentioned. I do own the Classic Collection 1 so I do have CUCM and I will concur that the contents is exceptional regardless of skill level. Some of the best tricks I know come from your books. |

If you still can't get the hang of the DL, then I might recommend Andi Gladwin's Master Pushoff.
It's a hard thing to learn, but a few hours practice, you'll get it, and it does look really convincing(: |

As others have suggested, don't discount the power of misdirection. If you look up from the deck/packet, look the spectator(s) in the eye, and make a statement (or, better yet, ask them a question), they'll take their eyes off your hands at least nine times out of ten. Then you can take your time setting up the double lift. Look back down, and they'll look back down...and you can proceed with the already set up lift.
Practice will get your double lift where you can do it with all eyes on your hands...but a second or two of misdirection will ease your own anxiety about getting caught. It may also distract you from that moment of tension when you're thinking "okay...I'm about to do a sleight...hope I don't get caught...here goes!" -- which will get you caught almost as surely as a lack of practice.

The brand new product "Science Friction" from Alex Kolle is an amazing new tool that allows even a beginner to execute a DL (or triple for that matter) with *extreme* ease - effortless. It also allows many other previously difficult moves and possibilities which were previously the domain of some of the experts chiming in here at the Café.
Highly recommended. Learning the basics is always best, but SF is something to look into - I love it: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......m=109&33 http://www.card-shark.de/index.cfm?page=......rtID=178

The Vegas card change (I think that's what it is called)is possible. I learnt it on a street magic dvd from ellusionist I think. Its farily simple to do and quite convincing if you do it smoothly.

A better resource for a good ACR routine is Daryl's ACR DVD. If you prefer a book format, it is in Daryl's ACR Omnibus. It's out of print but a very valuable resource if you have the patience to hunt a copy down. I did and it was worth every penny

My guess is you have not put in enough time to even allow yourself an alternative.
If you are too impatient then any magic you do will be crap. Only until you hurt, will you then trip across self discovery, otherwise study more and stop spending energy finding shortcuts. Thought I would balance out all the wonderful advice that he would have no reference to because if he did, he would not be asking. |
