Anyone care to guess where that word came from?

A Magic Café thread about pet names?

Tee Hee. I did mention it there once. Actually, it comes from the play and movie version of "On Borrowed Time" starring Cedric Hardwicke and Lionel Barrymore. A kid, played by Bobs Watson, calls Death (Hardwicke) this when he gets mad at him, but can't think of anything to call him. Great movie, btw.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I'm also somewhat partial to "phalanges."

Much as I love Donnie Darko, I wonder about this claim (I think the teacher in the movie says that a famous linguist made it). A long time ago I read an essay by J.R.R. Tolkien wherein he noted that the phrase "cellar door" had a beautiful sound, if you could ignore the meanings o the words and their spellings. I suspect that Tolkien's South African accent made the words much more beautiful than does my rough Western Canadian voice. I also don't know if the idea is Tolkien's or if he was following a tradition.

So, do you say "cellar door" quite frequently, Luke?

Yeh I rated Donnie Darko aswel .. But c'mon man don't call her the teacher that was babalicious Drew Barrymore ! ( not that celebrity's are all that)
JR Tolikien was quite wrong about ignoring the meaning of ' cellar door ' .. The meaning could be the best bit
I agree that w you that cellar door may not be the most beautiful phrase but it was a sweet notion in the film
Not exactly a favorite word but
I do think the best day of the year to say is the 17 th of June don't know why just sounds good !

Oops John didn't answer your question-
I don't think even people with cellar doors say cellar door that often
It reminds me to get my act together and head to margaret river or coonawara ( aussie ) wine country !
