The original "Stung" trick was invented by Lynn Searles in 1931 and hasn't changed much in all that time... until now. It really is a great kids trick, and if I do say so myself (brag, brag), my version makes it a great mystery as well. Instead of hiding the cards in a folder or behind a cloth, they are kept in a large manila envelope... that has a window cut into it that allows you to see completely through the envelope. No hiding places there! Yet the "B" manages to transform itself into a "BEE" and the audience gets "STUNG!" when they play around with it. The "B" is then found on your back, or better yet, on the back of your helper. Every card and even the envelope can be handed to a helper during the course of the trick ... nothing to hide. You make it yourself from card stock printed with your inkjet or laser printer and an ordinary manila envelope. Variations and routine suggestions are included. It's in The Wizards' Journal #21, for those who are interested in a packs-flat-plays-big kid show effect.

So do you have the rights to make this product?
I've just bought the latest ABC Stung on proper card stock for £30.

I'm not making the product, thanks for asking. My e-Book contains directions for any individual to make up his or her own "product" consisting of ungimmicked cards and an ungimmicked envelope and only needing proper handling to perform the same effect that was invented in 1931 and that has used gimmicked cards or props until now. I'm sorry you paid so much (£30 is about $50 including postage), but I am sure you are happy with your version and have no need for mine.

So you're illegally aiding some-one to make a pirated version of an existing quality product?

That's clever. Are you a lawyer? You should know the the effect has been available under the "STUNG" name since Mr. Searles published it in Sphinx (Mar 1932), p.7, and also with a variant in Sphinx (Jul 1933), p.144. The method, however is new and original and all mine, to do with as I choose. I am surprised, however, that the "existing quality product" did not cite the history or the source in the instructions or advertisements.

Spellbinder,
Sounds interesting. I like the spin off that you have came up with.

I kinda like the old bamboo mat thing. Nice thinking though.

The e-Book takes into account that individual users might prefer to hide the cards under a cloth (or even a bamboo mat) in order to put the discovery of the BEE under their control, rather than have the audience "see the BEE before the performer is aware of it". It's just a matter of style, whether you like to be in complete control, or like to pretend you got "caught out" and then turn it into a surprise for both you AND the audience.

The "it's vanished" gag was one of my favourite parts of it but horses for courses I spose.
The stung bit never made much sense to the kids either I seem to remember, maybe some different kickers would be a good idea for your publication. |

I agree that STUNG was never well understood by kids until Edwin Hooper added the picture of the BEE in the 1950's, and now most kids seem to get the joke that "playing around with a B will get you STUNG!" The surprising part is that this never became a packet playing card trick for kids, which would have made it obvious that no gimmicked cards are needed, or bamboo mats or clovering cloths, etc. In the e-Book, I have included a handheld packet version for those who are looking for a close up effect for performing for kids.

Just for the record, while the STUNG trick goes back to the 1930's, it was Edwin Hooper who came up with the idea of using three cards with the letters A, B and C, and having the B card transform into a BEE, and it was in the 1970's he released it not the 1950's.
I think it is fair to say that all the current marketed versions are rip-offs of Edwin's effect as I am unaware of anyone receiving permission to do so - but I could be wrong. In my opinion the best artwork was that used by Supreme, the others look amateurish. Spellbinder, sounds like you have come up with a new method which gives extra scope for gags and business. |

I prefer the regular classic handling. Why run if nobody is chasing you. I use this a lot and always get good reactions from it. Cheers!
