I was at a magic show about a week ago and the magician did a trick where he took a new deck, opened it and then did some false shuffles. Then he allowed the spectator to riffle shuffle once. But here is the kicker.... he was able to restore the order! Is anyone familiar with a trick/principle that allows this to happen?
I was thinking that it was just a clever way of using the Gilbreath principal, but I’m not sure. Any ideas? |

If a deck is SHUFFLED it is shuffled.
You can using the GAS (green angle separation), restore the order but that will force you to look through the pack. Another way is to execute some sort of push-through or similar shuffle. There is a technique where a spectator shuffles a deck once the magician never touches it and the deck is restored. It is called magic. |

I never said that the magician never touched it after the spectator shuffles. But he did get it back to new deck order.

As Nir said above "if a deck is shuffled it is shuffled", especially if it is by a layman. But, you didn't say to us if that was the whole trick. The magician shuffled the deck, the spectator shuffled the deck, the magician took the deck back, showed it is in its original order … and?? That was the trick??
If it was, there is explanation: Deck switch. It’s quick and simple. And impressive, of course. That’s our goal, isn't it? |

You might want to check out the Henry Evans video (volume 3) for a non-math solution to this problem. You'll kick yourself when the method is revealed.

Riffle shuffle once? Definitely stripper, that's what I thought as soon as I read it. I suppose you could switch decks if you wanted to make life hard for yourself.

Somewhere in my files I have a way to cull a deck of cards into new deck order (or any order for that matter) with only 6 culls.
I'm not saying that this method is what the magician you saw did, but it is a viable option under the proper performing conditions. I'm amused by the respondents that offered "stripper deck" or "deck switch" as if there were no other ways to accomplish this. Jason

I've seen you do that 6 cull set up - very impressive.

If you have a stripper deck you should be able to work it out for yourself

I will try to figure it out myself, but it is supposed to be fully shuffled and then returned to the original order, right? I don't know, maybe I need more experience with this deck and with card tricks in general.

The idea - I believe - is that the magician's shuffles are false (and retain new deck order)
The spectator then gives one riffle shuffle The magician is able easily to reverse this single shuffle by using the stripper deck PM me if this is not clear. |

The best as far as practical IMO is doing 5 faro's (you can do this before the show)then showing a very shuffled deck, after that do an effect that retains the order then do three more faro's but on the last one just get the weave started then spread the deck accross the table in an unsquared state and have the spectator slowly push the cards square,in this way it creats the impression that they shuffled the cards.
