I am searching for a DVD or gimmick prop that I can buy to get started learning some impromptu magic. Right now, I'm in medical school and as you can imagine there isn't a lot of time for me to spend becoming a scholar of magic. I want to build my magic skills slowly, bit by bit over the next decade or so. I want to start out learning an effect that is fun and that can be presented in numerous ways so that I could maybe use it several times in a row and people will think they are seeing different tricks. I'm also hoping that I can find something like this that will use objects that could be easily found in a bar (even if they are gimmicked) so that people don't think I'm a jerk for planning to show them magic tricks (medical students and doctors are very competitive, especially in social situations, and if they think I planned on doing magic tricks they'll get mad because they'll think I'm trying to upstage them). Anyway, with this in mind, has anyone got a suggestion about a DVD or effect I might purchase that can get me going in the right direction on this one? Thanks

Greg Wilson has a great DVD, "On the Spot". It has a fantastic coin trick, I forget what it's called but I've been refering to it as the 11 cent magic trick since I first saw/learned it. I almost always use it as my opener, I ask the person if they like riddles and if they can answer the riddle, I'll show them some magic. It's a perfect lead in. There is also Florida Keys on the video, a nice impromptu key and keychain effect. Look for any book or DVD relating to "magic with everyday objects". These vids and books are usually filled with magic effects that aren't to hard to learn and can be done with numerous items found at a bar or restaurant. Good luck!
