I remember several people asking about this patter. We used it at Zeezo's magic shop to sell cups and balls. Well, Captain Thom Bedlam (Thom Barnett) has taken this to a nice new level! He creates a great character and keeps in character! Very nice routine and great rapport with the audience at an outdoor festival. Great job, Thom!

Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

So is his inspiration Johnny Depp or Keith Richards? Beautiful!!!

Don't you love that character he creates? IMHO, I see classic Johnny Depp moves in his act, with his arms and his head, but still not enough to say he totally 'copied' him. He clearly studied that movie well and found a style that is his own. Very likeable!

Unfortunately, I don't think it was he who created that character, savvy? I'd like to see a little more of Thom in there. He's seems a talented performer.

Well, the actual subject of this topic is an old routine that is used for cups and balls. This routine has been discussed in several threads and no one has really remembered the routine. Thom does this routine completely and that is certainly noteworthy.
I think he would look like this if he rented any pirate costume anywhere. He is performing at the Pirate Festival in Canada. In reality, sea pirates were and are mostly dreadful people who did pretty awful things. His character is pretty much the modern Hollywood 'pirate' Johnny Depp stereotype. I don't think there is a real need to be the pirate police here, but your efforts are noted. Originality is always best and Karma whacks hard at those who get out of line. So if he did wrong, Karma is always around the corner.

Did Gene Gordon from Buffalo write the original patter on rub-a-dub-dub (with plastic cups if your please!) that that rascal what's his name again? oh yeah Mike Skinner absconded with first to the Magic Castle and thence to Vegas? I wonder come to think of it did Mike Gallo show Skinner the routine at Lou Gallo's house, in the basement?

Actually, Jack Bateman wrote this poem back in the 1950's and Gene Gordon Marketed the routine. This routine was later included in his book, "Gene Gordon's Magical Legacy", published by David Ginn. Phil Willmarth apparently owns the rights to this routine.
Nice info on Skinner, Mike Gallo and Lou Gallo! Ah, to be a fly on the wall...

Not info; surmise. I grew up in Buffalo and went to Gene Gordon's original magic shop on Franklin St. when I was a boy. But I did not get into magic really until the mid '60s in Ann Arbor. Later I did session with Lou and Mike but not back then. But I was one of the many kids who went there (to Gene's magic shop)in the '50s.
I have that book; I didn't realize the routine was in there! |

Fabulous experiences you have there, foolsnobody! You should write down these experiences in an article, along with some photos. I bet this would be of interest to many magicians. Pokie-poke, glad you found some humor!

I had watched that video on YouTube before. I think the routine is entertaining, but I felt it was obviously patterned after Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow character. I don't see a problem with that, since Depp doesn't do cups and balls. Most people now think Rub-A-Dub-Dub is a Bill Malone routine and it is. Just as it was Michael Skinner's before that and probably countless others before that. Since the booklet was marketed by Gene Gordon, there were probably hundreds or thousands of copies of it sold giving all those purchasers the right to perform it. Bill Malone did add an extra stanza to the poem and developed his own ending, which is great. According to the Genii Magazine article honoring Michael Skinner, his routine was mostly performed for children when Michael performed in restaurant venues and children were at the table with adults. I have the original Gordon booklet, the Genii article, and the World's Greatest Magic DVD where Bill Malone performs the effect. I've performed the routine countless times at my dinner table with my own twists, but still it's the original in most respects. Countless amateur magicians have performed a version of the Vernon routine for years. I find it very entertaining to see variations of both the Vernon routine and the Bateman/Gordon/Skinner/Malone routine. Actually, I find almost every C&B routine interesting. As Emerson wrote, "Everyone I meet is my superior in some way. In that, I learn from them." (Slightly paraphrased.)
Magic is where you find it.....

Fun to see the character performing, but I feel the routine needs misdirection as far as sound goes. I would suggest Paul Gertner's moves to mask the sounds. Just my 2 cents.
