Hi. I recently won a contest and now I can get any magic book for any price, and am looking for suggestions as to which book I should get. I was thinking about Greater Magic by Hilliard, but was unsure whether that would be the best choice. anyway, I'd love to hear all suggestions, because I'm really clueless as to which book would be best! Thanks.

I think you need to give us a bit more information on what type of book you're looking for, otherwise any suggestions will be fairly pointless really.

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm going to do close-up (I'm only 12, but having an incredible 1 on 1 experience with Simon Lovell, I've pretty much decided that that's the field I'd like to pursue). Anyway, let me tell you what my library is:
Magical Ways and Means by Al Baker Now You See it, Now You Don't by Bill Tarr Modern Coin Magic by J.B. Bobo Sleight of Hand by Edwin Sachs Scripting Magic by Pete Mcabe every single book by Professor Hoffman Close Up Card Magic by Harry Lorayne The Dai Vernon Book of Magic The Modern Conjurer by C. Lang Neil Mental Magic by Hugard And of course, Expert at the Card Table, by the incredible S.W. Erdnase. and for now, that's about it. I have a few books on showmanship, and theory, but I'm really looking for a book that will teach me more about magic in general, and I want learn some effects that very few magicians do, so I can be unique. I was looking around, and Our Magic by Nevil Maskeylne and David Devant. I want to learn some really great card effects that will really blow people away, and in my act I'd like to have a gambling demonstration, presenting second deals, bottom deals, centre deals, etc. Again, thanks for all your help! |

Oh, good, see you already have C-UCM.
Hey Nick: Why is it "shameless" when I try to help someone? Tsk, tsk.

"Hiding the Elephant" by Jim Steinmeyer.
It's mostly a history of stage performers in the past. No, you won't learn much about close-up. But you will learn so much about how to actually be a magician. Ed |

When will people learn that Harry is only trying to help others, not hurt them.
I am going to say it again since the last one got the boot... Harry has probably forgotten more about magic than most others will ever learn in their lives!!! Be respectful and you might just learn something!! Jim

It looks like you've got a pretty good start on a good library.
Obviously, since your contest prize allows you to get any book, you want to go for good AND expensive. This makes "Greater Magic" one excellent choice. An invaluable classic that would cost you a lot of cash to get otherwise. You might also consider a book from The Miracle Factory. Their stuff is beautiful and expensive, and every book of theirs I've read has been a gem. You might like "Cardini: The Suave Deceiver" or "Roy Benson by Starlight".

Thanks, Ronin. I didn't even know about The Miracle Factory, but clearly their items are worth the price. I think I'm gonna go with Greater Magic, or Our Magic by Maskelyne. Both seem to be good choices. Do you have any recommendations as to which one would be best?
I also want to add that the original prize (this was a youtube contest) was supposed to be any deck of cards that I wanted, but I decided that a book would benefit me much more. In any case, who needs anything better then a deck of Tally-Ho's? Thanks for all the help! |

Thespian,
Congratulations on winning the contest. You have a nice set of books now - good start on a magician's library. You might consider Strong Magic, by Darwin Ortiz. This book is expensive, so good use of you win, and different from your other books in that it is a theory book. This book will help you craft a presentation to make your magic more memorable. Good luck, Hudson |

At least some have learned that - and I've said it often enough - "jokes never come across the way you want them to over the internet."

Thespian,
Any chance you could post your winning entry for us to see? I'm curious. If you've narrowed it down to "Greater Magic" and "Our Magic", I'd go with "Greater Magic". I've seen affordable copies of "Our Magic" at swap meets and even on some magic shop bookshelves (Lybrary.com even has a PDF edition). Congrats again and have fun!

Ronin,
Thanks for the suggestion. I found a copy of Greater magic, a signed first edition on amazon that I'm going to get, and I also found that copy of our magic in pdf form. Thanks for all the help guys! |

Our Magic is also free at the Learned Pig Project, though I would add that $8 for the PDF at Lybrary seeems the better deal.

Lest I get a reputation for being disrespectful when I absolutely did not mean to be. |

Greater Magic if it's the whole thing. It's out of print and would be a good prize for you.
Harrys The Magic Book is very good too. In dept description of card staples. |

Just be careful of the Greater Magic Library - which was a series of books (I think 5) which when assembled is the entire Greater Magic by Hilliard.
