Hello,
I have almost finished reading RRTCM. I looked into Card college but a lot of the techniques are already covered in RRTCM and it seems like a lot of cash to spend on a series to pick through for the bits and pieces I don't have. I am thinking of getting some other books like Expert card technique instead and pick up some books like that rather than card college. Just wondering if anyone thinks its worth starting on volume 1 or starting at a volume where the majority of the material I won't know. |

Yes it is worth it...believe me. Start with volume one. There is a lot that is not covered in RRTCM...

You might want to look into some of my books - The Classic Collection books may be right "up your alley." Go to my new magic website (third one listed under this post), click on "Magic Books" and check 'em out. HL. (There's a YouTube place (I'm a lousy computer person!) where you can see me doing some of the stuff. I don't think I'm allowed to post it here. Don't know.)

I thought the same thing when I looked into moving on from RRTCM. I started off buying CC volume 3 but liked it so much, I ended up buying the others anyway. This might not be a bad approach, as you can at least see if you like the style of the book before committing to buying all 5.
CC covers a LOT more over the course of the five books than RRTCM and it goes into much greater detail on many of the sleights as well. In my opinion it contains the most clearly detailed explanations of card sleights I've seen in any book and I would highly recommend it. ECT is obviously much cheaper and goes into a lot of depth on many 'expert' level techniques (as the name would probably suggest!), but personally I found this book very hard going. If you're looking for some great effects then Mr Lorayne's recommendation is obviously a great place to start. I just got Close Up Card Magic for my birthday actually, and so far it is excellent! |

Although the cost of well known and respected books may seem expensive, if you have ever considered a packet trick or a stripper deck, they are very cheap! Comprehensive well written books like The Classic Collection and Card College run about $35 or $40. Given that they teach skills that will last a lifetime and can be used in a wide range of situations makes them a great value. If you are ever thinking about the trade-off of a fancy deck and a good book, buy the book!

Sorry, but my The Classic Collection volumes are in the $90.00 range. I was talking about those (Close-Up Card Magic is re-written, updated, etc., in Volume 1 along with four other early books of mine, plus new stuff) - so it's TCC I'm talking about, not CC. Just want to eliminate any confusion. Best - HL.

Thanks all, Wasn't a hundred percent but now I think I will go out and buy one of the volumes to see how I like it... When I have the money. I hate the fact that magic books are so expensive in Australia, looking at around $80-100 for one volume of card college . Times like this I wish I started learning magic when I lived at home with my parents!!!

Best bargain is the flat rate envelop at around $14.00 which can usually fit one hardcover book depending on the size. Medium and Large flat rate boxes are also good and work as decent shipping options.

I'm thinking of just getting them from penguin as I can pick up volume 1 & 2 for about $100 Austrlian, including postage.
M.Ruetz thanks for the info on the shipping that is very cheap. Sorry for the ignorance but is there any magic sites that would offer this? Most of the places I have looked at seem to be charging about $30 or more for shipping. |

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, if you can afford it get this. It's a great set.

ECT is a very hard read. I've tried going through it multiple times and never got past chapter 2. This is mainly because I insist on at least becoming average with each sleight before moving on. And being stuck was a huge reason why I came to the Café.
So I should put down ECT and get Card College as an in-between? |

Get card college vols. 1 and 2 immediately. They are worth their weight in gold. Easy to read, systematic, thoughtful, and very thorough. Giobbi is an excellent teacher. And don't miss the oft-overlooked theory sections at the end of vol. 2. Great stuff.

If your time is of any value to you, I'd start with the card college books over the Hugard ones; you'll make much faster progress. The card college series will take you from absolute beginner to world class expert.
Eventually you'll want to get the Hugard texts as well-- some great tricks in them and its good to see another point of view on the sleights. And most definitely get Lorayne's classic collection as well. |

Hi
I just picked up Vol. 1(new) for 24.00 shipped. If I like vol.1 I'll pick up vol.2 when I'm done with vol.1. Thanks for the suggestions. Ralph
