Hey, Folks!
Am kicking around ideas in my head to illustrate the "Parable of the Soils" (a.k.a. "The Parable of the Sower" -- Matthew 13:1-23; Mark 4:1-34; Luke 8:4-18). My magical context would be close-up work. I have a vague idea I could do something with the sympathetic coins or possibly some sort of 4-aces or 4-kings trick / routine? Anyone else out there done / heard of something alone these lines. Thanks!! david |

I do a four coin routine that vanishes three coins in different ways as I recite, Luke 8:4-8 with the final coin transforming into a jumbo coin.
The routine is similiar to Silver Dream by Justin Miller but modified to accommodate 4 coins. The fourth coin instead of vanishing, transforms into a jumbo coin. I then go into verses 11-15 explaining the meaning of the parable. You can pretty much use any vanish and transformation that you feel comfortable using. I try to use vanishes that will closely relate to the story. For example, the first coin I vanish using a false transfer, then sleeved, but I squeeze my fist then slowly open it while extending my hand up as if freeing it. If you are familiar with Silver Dream I'd be willing to share my routine and method with you.

I think something like a matrix routine might work well (cards and coins). You could also use poker chips or other items instead of coins.
You could print images of the different soils onto blank playing cards, to customize it. You could even do it with seed packets (as the coins) and jumbo cards. Or have the seed packets as the cards, and something else underneath to represent the different soils. - Donald

Thanks so much, Harris, RevBill, for the ideas!
In particular, Dan -- I really liked your four-coin idea and you've already given me an idea for related finale. Thanks! I'm a relative novice (my copy of Bobo's MCM is only mildly creased, vs. truly dog-eared <smile>) and when I looked up the promo on Justin M's site, I knew that that level of sleight was out of my league for the here-and-now. (Know your limits, Momma always said...) Though, it's a stunning routine and I'll remember your generous offer if I venture to acquire it! Donald -- very nice idea about the packets. I like it! Thanks again, guys. david |

If you are thinking coins you might want to include
a. bent penny b. Karate coin c. shrinking penny or one that gets bigger first..then smaller or fades away. We did this a lot in our Christian Drama Troupe using silent action/mime during the reading of the parable. Praising God! love brother Harris fishers of men of kansas city

Emory Williams, Jr. http://www.williamsmagic.com in his 2006 FCM convention lecture notes had a great idea for the Parable of the Sower: Fill a styrofoam cup with water, turn it over, water falls out. Fill another with water, punch a hole in it, water comes out. Last cup has in it secretly slush or gel powder, pour water in, turn it over, either nothing comes out or transformed snow comes out. Represents the various types of soil, the last being where the Word of God transforming the individual (the others being where the Word simply did not "stay" in the cup/individual). Neat idea. Emory may also be coming to a town near you in his really neat jammed full camper of magic/traveling full service magic shop. Gives new meaning to the "brick and mortar" shop. Nothing beats actually personally seeing and reviewing the products on display in bins or on shelves and asking questions of a knowledgeable dealer.

If interested in purchasing his 2006 FCM lecture notes mentioned above, they are still in stock. Go to Mr. William's store web site above, type in "Gospel Magic" in the search box, then scroll down to his lecture notes "The Right Mix". Even though these are terrific notes in my view, they are probably overpriced at this point for $15 (other than not otherwise being available- a collector's item), and they were probably sold my guess is for $5 at the actual FCM convention as they are less than 20 pages total. Maybe Emory can throw them in for free if you purchase his custom made "Predestination" trick from him as well (I have not seen this effect sold elsewhere).

What might folks suggest for this parable if rather than close-up, the venue was larger? (of course, the styrofoam cups works for a larger audience -- anything else?)

Have you considered 4 cups and ball's routine? I've been chewing on that concept for the same parable. The small balls could be used as "seed", or if you can actually figure out a substitute that looks like a large seed. You sow one under each cup to reveal different outcomes, with the final cup having an explosion of small balls or one BIG ball. Anyway, play with it.
Another idea might be a matrix type effect using seed packet envelopes in lieu of cards. Sorry for late input. Just spotted this thread. PM me with what you came up with.
WHAT IF you wake up tomorrow with ONLY the things that you THANK GOD for today?

The first effect that came to mind when I read the topic was the Colored Sands. It is beautiful, and would work well on stage.
For a close-up routine, the first thing that came to my mind was some variation of the Coins Across routine. THOM: I would also be interested in your balloon routine! Blessings to all......

I think the germ of this came from Laughmakers magazine, many, many years ago. This is the bare bones. You'll need to flesh it out a bit. Preparation: cut the end off one animal balloon.
Balloons are like people. One way: They come in different sizes, shapes and colors. The people who make balloons know what they are doing when they make them in different sizes, etc. and I think that God knew what He was doing when he made people in different sizes, etc. Another way balloons are like people: they need to be filled. Some balloons are filled with gas or water, but sculpture balloons need to be filled with air. People need to be filled, too. They need to be with God's love. (Try to fill the balloon with the end cut off.) This balloon has a hole in it. Or rather, two holes: one to let the air in and one to let the air out. Some people, when they hear about God's love, it just goes in one ear and out the other. (Inflate one balloon, but don't tie the knot. I usually ask somebody to hold it for me. At any rate, when you let go, the balloon should fly off.) Oh, I forgot to tie the knot, and so the air never became a part of the balloon. Some people, when they hear about God's love, become blotted, or puffed up, but they never let the Good News become a part of their lives, and the next thing you know, they are flying off after some wind of doctrine. (Inflate another balloon, but over-fill it so it breaks easily. Tie the knot. Start twisting it.) To make a balloon animal, you need to twist it and turn it. (The turn is a lock twist.) Life is full of twists and turns, ups and downs. When the twists and turns, the ups and the downs of life come along, some people think that God has forsaken them. When the hard times come, the bad times come, they go to pieces. (Keep twisting and turning the balloon until it breaks.) But God doesn't promise us that life will be easy. He does promise us that he will always be with us, through the good times and the bad. (Inflate a balloon and make a balloon animal. I suppose a simple dog would do, but something a little fancier would be better. I like to make the parrot in a ring.) This balloon costs less than a dime, but it is now worth a lot more. And just as I twisted and turned it into a new creation, God is molding us into New Creations. When we hear the Good News and we allow God's love to fill us, when that love becomes a part of who we are, when we remember that God loves us and is with us through all the twists and turns in life -- the good times and the bad -- then we, too, can become New Creations, more like God meant us to be. |

Since asking for advice here (almost two years ago now), the "magical" illustration I've used for the Parable of the Sower is...
Instant Radio (I use v2 -- it does a great job) I introduce the parable, read it and its Biblical explanation, and say something like: "Jesus is saying that it takes more than just listening to the message. It takes letting the message sink in. If we don’t, we’re like the path who doesn’t even “get it”. It takes letting the message sink in, but it also takes protecting the message even in the midst of trouble. If we don’t, we’re like the rocky ground that only lets the seed sprout, but no more. And it also takes nurturing the message, and listening to it more than the “competition”. If we don’t, we’re like the ground with thorns. But if we let the message in, and protect it in spite of trouble and competition, then we will see real differences made in our lives. And not just small differences. The Bible says that the harvest of God (the fruit of the Spirit) includes love, joy and peace, patience, kindness and goodness." Then I explain that when I was a boy, I made a radio (true story)... I ask for a volunteer, who comes and stands on a stool. I then show four parts of a radio (all made out of foam-board): the case, the antenna, the "amplifier" (looks like a speaker) and the "tuner" (a needle-in-a-box). I hold two of these pieces in my hand, the volunteer holds the other two pieces in her hands. When all the pieces are assembled, the radio (belt-switch) turns on! If any one of the pieces is removed from its in place, the radio turns off! "A radio is really quite simple. It has three parts. And they all have to work if you want it to be useful. First, there is the antenna – without an antenna, you wouldn’t be able to receive any radio waves from the air. Next, there is a amplifier – if the amplifier doesn’t work, or if it isn’t grounded, you either get nothing or you get a lot of noise. Finally, there is the tuner – with the tuner, you would get all the radio stations together – when of course you really only can listen to one at a time. "But this is exactly like the parable, isn’t it. First, we need receptive hearts. Without receptive hearts, the radio has no antenna to pick up the message. (We need to "get" the message -- just like seed sinking into the soil) Second, we need inner strength against trouble. Without inner strength, the trouble we run into is going to be too much for us. (We need to let the message grow roots, so that it can survive when life gets hard) Third, we need to choose. We choose who we are going to listen to. If there is an important emergency message on one radio station, it won’t do us any good to be listening to another. And God isn’t going to be particularly impressed if our excuse for not following him is that we’ve spent all our time watching TV, hanging out on the internet, and listening to our friends. Nuh-uh – we need to tune our hearts to the Kingdom of God. (We need to feed the message so that it can compete in our lives)."
