Hi all,

I'm in the UK and work mostly as a close up magician.
I was trying to work out exactly how many potential markets I could tap into to maximise the potential. So far, I have:
- restaurants and bars
- trade shows
- shopping centres
- private parties and events
- shop openings
- coffee shops
- close up busking

Does anyone else have any good suggestions as to possible markets for close up magic?

Thanks,

John

Theatre? I believe Paul Daniel did this sort of tour with close-up (parlour?) material.

With the projection systems and screens now available you are not limited to specific venues.

B,

Yeah, I suppose with a good budget, close up can be screened anywhere. Stage magicians normally include a close up portion, via the technology you mentioned, too add contrast to the show. I don't think that I'm quite ready to fill a theatre just yet though.

Still, thanks for the suggestion. It's good to think about these things!

Hospitality suites are where I do most of my work...or convention meet/greets/opening nights...shopping malls, corporate openings and client entertainment, conventions, restaurants that need something to entertain people while they wait for tables...or to be entertained at their tables. Family reunions/parties...

There are many many markets.

"Theatre" does not have to be big. (Check out one of the other recent threads about selling out a "theatre" show.) Systems can be rented, or "sponsored" ie. 2 - 60" screens and a camera.

Paul Gertner is currently doing the small theater as well, with his close-up magic.

Almost unlimited creative opportunities…

Beside our (so-called) ‘regular’ (I guess more acceptable) Illusion Review Shows in our Casino Showrooms, we have also done quite a few successful runs of our Close-Up Casino Showroom Review Shows over the last 25 years... LOTS of opportunities for close up.

Weddings, Corporate and Local Magic Classes of every shape and design all close-up, Car Lots and Store promotions… Blah, blah, blah, blah, bah. (etc)

Look at:
= http://www.SmokeAndMirrorsMagicBar.com - Cool portable magic close up cabaret.
= http://www.UsedMagicIllusions.com – Taylor has a cool, portable close-up stage thingy that’s worth looking at…

Google and YouTube has LOTS of great solutions in so many different type of examples and venues for inspiration…

Of course there are several more over recent years that have done the same to some degree or another… Steve Dacri, Of course Steve Cohen and now many others have followed suite with a more formal close-up or stand-up show.

Of course the Old "Tom Fooleries" (sp) as well as "Warren & Annables"... just a few more examples.

LOTS of opportunity...

Hope that serves…

If you are talking about the true "Smoke and Mirrors" bar, the contact info is on the site above.

I saw a live demo of it with all the smoke and special effects, it is an amazing (and costly) set up. But to be introduced by an animatronic figure is cool.

Several others have designed less complex performing set-ups.

Both Blair and I have seen this “Smoke & Mirrors!” Cabaret Comedy & Magic Bar and it IS more that just kinda’ cool… it s REALLY COOL!

ONE of the significant reasons our close-up theatrical review show worked all those years ago is cuz we built all the killer “production & aesthetic values” (Sets, Structure, Smoke, Fire, Flash, Bangs, Puffs of Smoke, Lights, Confetti, Killer Sound… etc) and killer close-up magic into our Casino Review Style package. - It really works!

SURE, it’s a lot more work that walking in with a deck of cards in your pocket, but the production and groove is sooo much better… plus the aesthetic production values is worth more too so bigger pay-days. - -That’s NOT the only reason why we did it, but it just happened to also be icing on the cake! – Whoo Hoo!

The “Smoke & Mirrors” was much more compact that what we did, but it still packs and really big punch for sure! – Elliot has done what few others ever even dreamed of doing, to the majestic level and quality he had, but it ain’t cheap. (It’s not over-priced considering the VALUE, but it’s not ‘cheap’)

I’m not sure he’s ‘selling’ them out right, though he MAY Be… I ‘thought’ he was planning on ‘licensing’ them, but the only real way to know is to (Like Blair said) contact them and see.

Too… if you Google Close-Up Magic Bar or YouTube and you’ll see some other examples as well as at-least ONE Video of a guy showing you the progression of him building his-own ‘Portable Magic Bar’ that will help inspire.

Hope that serves…
