I'm trying to think up some nice effects using my Deans box and would like to know if this has been done before?

I remember and effect a while back called "couppled"?

Essentially the same effect. You could do the Cord-A-Cup by covering it with a handkerchief or napkin and having spectators hold the ends of the rope, then the magician reaches under and magically removes the cup from the rope, the same as with UnCuppled. You could do UnCuppled by hanging it behind your back like in Page's Cord-A-Cup presentation. I actually find it a bit more of a pleasing presentation to have the cup covered with a handkerchief than hanging the cup over the performer's back, which seems awkward to me.

Both Cord-A-Cup and UnCuppled use a small gimmick that can easily be disposed of at the end. For some reason many people seem to dislike UnCuppled. I think it's because of the cost ($65.00 for Uncuppled made by Viking Magic compared to $25.00 for Cord-A-Cup if you purchase it ready-made from Patrick Page Magic.) Both are probably a bit over-priced for what you get. Neither comes with some brilliant routine, it's just a cup threaded onto a rope and then the cup is magically released from the rope, so you're not paying for a script or routine. If you get Patrick Page's book (well worth it) or a set of his lecture notes where he teaches Cord-A-Cup you could easily make it yourself for about $4.00 (not including the cup, but that can be borrowed , and you very likely already own an assortment of coffee mugs , but if you buy a dedicated coffee mug to use in performance then add on another $1.00 for purchasing the mug from the Dollar Store). A skilled person could make the UnCuppled gimmick, but would cost you more and in my opinion not really worth the time and effort to make it if you can just buy it ready-made by Viking Magic.


The advantage of Cord-A-Cup is you can perform it with any type of coffee mug or tea cup with a handle (or even with a beer mug), whereas with UnCuppled you must perform it with the type of enameled metal camping cup that it comes with. The cup itself can be examined at the end along with the rope , but that's the kind of cup you must use for UnCuppled. The advantage of UnCuppled is a cleaner display of the rope threaded through the cup handle compared to Cord-A-Cup.

Pat Page's routine is also in the big book "Magic Page by Page" - highly recommended.

The first part of the routine, before the mug is introduced, forms part of a routine called "There's a Hole in the Rope" which I bought from Pat in Davenports many years ago after he showed it to me. I still occasionally use it with the original rope and plastic ring.

I have combined a cup handle and "ring on rope" effects for decades - no gimmicks. My Necklacy Routine has various objects on a rope at the beginning - one being a cup.
Each object is magically removed and sued in other effects depending on audience ends/appreciation.

Point is that here should be a reason for the cup to be there - nit just a different prop.
If you can't do an effect with the cup without the rope, you are missing out ...
