Could someone suggest a different transfer for this routine. I really don't like the one that is suggested in Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. I seem to be drawing a blank on this and thought I would turn to the Café for a little help.
Thanks, Martock |

Hi Martock,
Lou Gallo The Underground Man has a couple of works on this. p.19 Thieves and Sheep, and p.22 Thieves Pitchin' Sheep. I especially like "Thieves Pitchin' Sheep" and have been working on it for probably about a couple of years now. I do have a little trouble with "executing" - depending on your perspective, of course - a "Ross Bertram-esque Transfer" p.23. I could probably use a more specific and/or visual reference for that manouever ( I think the only Bertram references I currently have are in Bobo's and they don't completely paint the picture for me- help? ), but, otherwise, I find it much much superior to the methodology of the Bobo's versions (Dover pp.208, 249). Nice call Laurie. Lou Gallo's pitch is a lethal conceit that seems SO fair. It it one of those "open" sleights that I love to do that just seem so innocent

Another option, also a very good one, is the reworking of this routine called Butch, Ringo & the Sheep by Ron Bauer. He takes the classic plot from the Bobo book and streamlines it, cleans it up and adds another twist to it. Even if you want to perform it the way it is described in Bobo, you can use the Ron Bauer method/routine without any of the added extras and it will work just fine.
Martock: On a side note, I will PM you with a way to perform a clean variation on the transfer from the Bobo routine, which uses the same type of actions. You may find it to be more comfortable to you. The Thieves Pitchin Sheep is also very good. I use the Gallo, Bauer and Bobo versions equally myself and I have never had a problem with any of them and at least for me, it is hard to pick a favorite. |

I much prefer that methodology, though I think the problemesque transfer remains, in essence, the same. (I repeat: help? )

Well it seems that in the Lou Gallo stuff I have, I don't have the book you are referring to Laurie. I do how ever have his pitch info some how. I will give this a shot and see how I feel about it. Thanks for the help.

Just to clarify, my 3:35 post was in response to Vlad. Dr. J posted at the same time. I was referring to the methodology employed in "Thieves Pitchin' Sheep".
You're welcome, Martock. As stated, the aforementioned transfer is something I could use a little help? on, as well. Laurie |

Wow more replies while I was trying to comment to Laurie LOL. Thanks Dr J. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
I guess I just needed to put this out there because I have come up with three different ways to do this since I posted the first time LOL. I will be working this out later on and tell you what I come up with. Thanks for all the help. |

Laurie, the phrase "Ross Bertram-esque transfer" downplays the difficulty of this technique. It was a specialty of Bertram's and of very few others after him. You're actually tossing a coin from hand to hand, but because of the blocking and proximity of the larger movements (is that vague enough to avoid exposure?) it isn't seen. For the most detailed write up of this, see "Bertram's Best" in "Magic and Methods of Ross Bertram". For the general idea in a more accessible source, see "Double Cross" in the Ross Bertram section of Stars of Magic.
The technique best fits those who gesture broadly and frequently. With your more deliberate and graceful style, you may find Bertram's transfer used in "Copper and Silver Transposition" (Bobo's, Chapter VIII, Coins Across) "Fourth Method" more comfortable, and just as deceptive.

Well, I've been reading a little Ross Bertram and I always find it nice to see I'm working at something apparently exactly the way I should be. I need to stop underestimating myself, and Mr. Bertram has just confirmed that for me. When I first started working on this, I quite enjoyed the amazing simplicity and effect of my efforts regarding a "Bertram-esque transfer". Inevitably, things unravel a little, and I begin to doubt my approach and think I must be missing something. I pick up a recommended source, and see I've been proceeding as required, it will take "a little practice" to get the timing down consistently. So, on track status confirmed, I shall pick up work on this effect once again, and march boldly on... very funny to read what magicians like Bertram have been getting away with for years. Genius simplicity. Note taken, once again.
