So aces, by rights supermarkets should just fire people every couple of years and re-hire people at the lower minimum wage rate?

No, there shouldn't be a minimum wage, or healthcare, or a weekend. Companies should be allowed to work people 112 hours a week at 10 cents a day and their employees should be happy to get it. Also, to Hilton with safety regulations!
People who complain are weak ingrates who should be tossed out on the streets!

There are people out on the street who might have jobs if there weren't a minimum wage. I'm not saying that we shouldn't have one, but it does have some negative side effects (such as pricing some people out of the labor market).

The solution is not more exploitation. The solution is to provide jobs or funds to people who are that desperate that they would choose to be exploited.

My impression, and I may be incorrect, is that the minimum wages in the various states mostly range between $5 and $8 (poverty level wages) and I feel that level is probably low enough that the negative side effects like pricing some people out of the labor market are mostly avoided. It would be different if the minimum wages were in the $12 to $15 range, say.

It's interesting that you would characterize any wage below the legally mandated minimum wage as exploitative.

Take a further look at see how many are the main bread providers that work at Wal Mart. By providers I am referring to having a spouse and children. I would venture to say that outside of dept managers and asst managers there are probably NONE. The jobs we are speaking of are the same group who used to work in the shoe fatories and dress factories years ago. These jobs are not now nor I do not see them becoming in the future the main source of income in a FAMILY unless you get into management. The same goes for grocery clerks. Most are part time and that trend will continue as it is the nature of the beast. As I said these jobs have replaced non skilled positions that were fctory jobs years ago. We needed unions when we had sweat shops and the employees were taken advangage of but that is not the case today and you know it. Employees want 15 minute breaks that last 20 to 25 minutes. They want lounges that are for smokers and lounges that are for non smokers quite frankly they should have them. What these employees should not have and should not expect to have is the keys to the kingdom and dictate hours, wages and management responsibilities. Employees should have the right for a safe enviornment in which to work to get paid for the hours they work and get paid the wage they acccepted to wrok for. They should also expect an increase when their production and value to the company increases, not because they have been there for x number of years. That is the same logic as going to your boss and saying I need a raise because my wife had a baby. Doesn't it make more sense to go and ask for a raise because you have increased your production and value to said company, not because your wife had a baby. Employers are not welfare in that the more kids you have the more they must pay you. Sorry it does not work that way. Again you get paid for what you know or what you do. If you know nothing and do nothing your pay should reflect that... I know that sounds unfair to those who know nothing and do nothing but that is life. That is why we call it work. Everyone wants more. Just that some are willing to work for it and while I hesitate to say it, others want a union. LOOK OUT INCOMING.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000
