I don't really think there is much to say fr one method over another, but I like any book test that allows any book be used.
The only reason I care is most likely I know some books can be special to some people, in each and every way, and I'm sure someone who doesn't care about that really prefers the book tests where more info than a "mere" word can be projected. So I'm somewhere inbetween preferring examinability AND liking detail. Maybe someone knows of a test that allows that? /bamba ok, I'll name one... Busch's paperback one.... |

The "Mother Of All Book Tests" is the best. Larry Becker's Flashback is also an excellent piece of work.

I have about 10 or 12 book tests. I USE the Mother Of All Book Tests almost exclusively.
In my not so humble opinion, it is the very best. Best regards, Tony Razzano

A Contrarian Perspective:
I don't like trick books. I admire the cleverness of "Mother" and "Final Exam" and "Insight" and "Flashback" and all the rest, and I use such things occasionally, but I don't count them among my favourites. I never want to be in a position where, if someone steals my briefcase, they steal my act. I want to be able to do what I do anywhere, at any time (in the best of all possible worlds) or at least with half an hour's preparation of stuff I can buy at the local office supply store (in the worst case). So my personal favourites include Irv Weiner's "Miraculous Test", my own variation on the Hoy test, and Alain Nu's impromptu work with paperbacks. ... Doug

Doug ,
Is Alain Nu's impromptu work also described in "Peek Performances" ? Where can I find Irv Weiner's "Miraculous Test" ? Thanks. E-Leoni. |

Larry Becker's Ultimate Flashback gets my vote! Anyway, it is not just the book.
90% is the presentation of the magician!

My question is WHY? A book test is NOT a stand alone effect (and if it is you are just doing a mental magic trick and doing a great diservice to the book test itself) as it is merely a tool as part of a bigger effect or lead in for further "thought reading" of your audience. Book tests are merely a step in a larger routine, or at least they should be.

Why Paul?.....because...
They come in handy if you are without pencil and paper, no coins in your pocket, and some one asks you to show them something....and this person happens to be a rich client who might hire you for his company party, which is going to bring you $1500, and you just happen to be in a book store with this guy....who doesn't have to much time...and this guy asks you to show him something ....I think then it might be a good thing to do a book test on its own. Thankyou all for your input.
Can anybody tell me what the name of the book test that Paul Zenon did on one of his specials was called - the one where the selected page of the borrowed book is borrowed. Thanks, TempleMagic |

I like Al Koran's " Newspaper test ". It is not really a booktest but effect is identical for the public: A figure between 1 and 16 is chosen (really chosen FREELY) by a spectator. The newspaper is torn and the spectator takes the piece being in the row(rank) corresponding to the figure chosen by him. He reads mentally the tackled issue on this piece and the mentalist guesses it at once. If the mentalist prepares the effect slightly in advance he can make a prediction in a sealed envelope. It is very easy to make, very natural, all can be examined and impact is strong. In more it is sudden (Not prepared)or almost.
In my opinion no bookest has all these qualities! Best regards, Karl |

I appreciate the discussion (the level of which is always good on the Café) but the LAST need I want to see is a list of book tests published on a web site.

The "best" book test is one that a performer can put across with sufficient drama and credibility. While I use a "prepared" book test in my professional act (MOAB in conjuction with Goldstein's Autome), I enjoy using unprepared books in my casual or impromptu work (Hoy book test). In my opinion, the Hoy test is the one book test that every serious mentalist should learn to perform properly.
