Hey, I learned this book test the other day by reading a Magic book. What you do is force two cards like lets say a 9 and an 8. You hand the SPEC a book. Then they can check it out and all. Then you have them cut the deck. Have them take off the two top cards they cut and ask them to add the two cards together. Whatever they get go to that page. Then they do and you begin to talk about what's on that page. Now, what I was thinking of, What if I got like a small pocket dictionary? Have them do the same thing and when they go to that certain page I would read some of the words on that page? It would kind a look more real since everyone has a dictionary. What you guys think?

Nice thinking with the dictionary. I know some people really prefer dictionaries (since that is a very natural place to find a word!)

If you feel it works well with the cards, then I guess it's fine. Otherwise you may wish to consider coming up with techniques without using props that don't really have anything to do with the demonstrated effect. The basic books of mentalism should give you plenty ideas.

I think what book you use kind of depends on the situation you're performing in.

Dictionaries are a very good idea if you can rely on everyone having the same one as you can then use "their" book for pages you've remembered at home.

Another way of using "their book" is to get a peek at one while they're not paying attention.

Sounds like a card trick to me.

Skitch, this is just my opinion, but I shy away from any thing that limits the choice of a spectator unless it doesn't seem like it limits it. What I mean is I will you equivoque because to them it seems like they can have any choice they want to make, but not use something like cards to pick the page. Try just a riffle force with the book, or cut some of the edges of the pages and use them like a short corner, or use a calculator and have them press random numbers that will be used when they total up. I hope you can see the difference. This is why I've never liked Mental Epic because you give them the abiltiy to think of anything first then again then you end by limiting their choice. I have solved that problem, but I've always stayed away from doing it the normal way.

In Pabular(What? Another plug?) Barrie Richardson has a 3word dictionary book-test. All three are freely chosen from any page, only one is written down and even that one does not require a centre-tear. It is quite clever if anyone here can use it. It uses any book as well.
