So I decided to get rid of this beer gut once and for all and I swear to Hilton that I would shoot Santa Clause in the face for some oatmeal scotchies right now.

So here's a diet to try......never buy any food or drink with more than five ingredients.
There's a lot to be said for it. |

Do some research on eating specifically for your blood type. There are certain foods that although healthy for you, can reduce your metabolic rate.
I am an O positive blood type and wheat actually diminishes my metabolism rate. Corn affects my insulin production, pork is very difficult for my system to process along with milk, etc.... Beer causes weight gain in me, due to the wheat content that causes me to bloat along with slowing down my metabolic rate. Find out what specific foods are best for you body using a google search. Best of luck on your health mate! |

Mostly doing the whole foods thing as much as possible. A bit of food combining influence 'cause I find I have less heartburn when I use more food combining principles.
But mainly trying to avoid stuff that's been processed a ton. Not all the time, but as much as practical. I still want a frickin' cookie and a Fatburger though. Not doing cheat meals for a while. Just too easy to go overboard once the momentum starts.

Try the "no white" rule. Get rid of any white foods: sugar, mayo, rice, white bread, etc.

That is a good rule.

I think there are exceptions to every rule. I like medjool dates with neutshurftel, nubstuffel, nutshuffel... cream cheese.

Working on a year-long plan right now. Lost 30 pounds in the last 7 months, trying to get down to 200 by February 2012. This is a non-exercise regimen, as the last few times I've tried getting in shape that way I got injured, which got me annoyed and made me say "screw it" to the diet.
I'm not a doctor or diet specialist so caveat emptor and all that. These are just things I've done. * Eliminated Soda, both regular AND diet. Saw a video explaining how they both mess up your body's PH and by extension mess up your metabolism. * Keeping daily calories under appropriate daily amount for target weight. As a male aiming for 200 pounds, that means 2000 calories. * Keeping to daily recommended sodium. One reason to make sure you cook your own food is so that you can monitor this. Even a small can of soup can eat up %50 or more of your daily sodium while only offering a couple hundred calories, and that means everything else you eat that day has to be pretty bland. * Drink recommended daily amount of water. I've tried actually drinking more than this amount, and two things came of it. (1) Constant trips to the washroom. (2) The odd headache that I believe was brought on by intracranial pressure via overhydration. Google "Water Poisoning". Scary stuff. That said, I've been trying to keep that recommended daily amount. * If it's got carbs, it better have fibre. Somewhat consistent with the no-white strategy. I've converted all carbs accordingly (pasta, bread, etc.). Again, I don't recommend this to anybody else, just saying this is what I'm doing myself.

Those are all good strategies. The fiber and soda tips are really good.
It's scary how much soda folks drink nowadays. I always see huge people at Walmart on jazzie scooters with cases of soda. I'm not saying this to demean overweight people, only to point out that those 48 Mountain Dew's may not be the best idea for someone of those dimensions.

The eye-opener there, though, is that diet soda is potentially just as bad. Granted, I used to go through about a liter or more a day, but it never even occurred to me that it could be bad for me as it didn't have any calories. I'll see if I can hunt down something substantial. One study says it's about the pH, while another says it's about the aspartame.

The South Beach diet worked well for me. Probably because rye bread is considered a "good carb", and I love rye bread.

Hi, I am also trying to reduce my wait and I know it works because I did it before… with some success. I have a little bit of knowledge in the science—field and to me the following way sounded and sounds the most successful:
You have a reservoir for carbohydrates; as long as it exists your body won´t touch your `fat-reservoirs´. So, for at least two weeks you have to cancel all carbohydrates from your eating-plan to delete your resources from that reservoir. But you mustn´t get hungry in that time, because that starts the normal `too less to eat´-program in your body that leads to operating on a low flame level and as a result ends in the yo-yo-effect. If the carbohydrate-reservoir is empty then your body uses the fat-reservoir for long time success. After that try to minimize the carbohydrate-percentage of your food constantly, if possible shift the times you take the carbohydrates to the morning hours, no carbohydrates after 3´clock pm, and I am sure you will have success in reducing your weight on a regular basis and you won´t have a really `yo-yo-effect`. There are some mechanisms depending e.g. on insulin that work for you also and will ensure that you are reducing your weight. So, the rule `nor white´ makes sense, no white wheat, no sugar, keep attention to some fruits that have quite a high rate of sugar and so on. To me it was no real problem to left these things out and the weight is still reducing, on a quite effective rate and I have no fear of the `yo-yo-effect´. Good luck, my friend! |

I wasn't sure whether to post this or not, but what the heck.
A friend of mine weighed about 400 lbs. A year ago he started a metabolic diet, and now he is down to around 210 lbs. This is a serious thing. He is enrolled in a special diet program, he has regular check-ups, he meets with a doctor every week or so. The metabolic diet he is on is the one developed by Dr. Poon. Apparently at least the basics of the diet are described in a book that one can buy. http://www.poondiet.com/ It is not for everyone, and it is really targeted towards the seriously obese. But my understanding is that the basics of the diet can be adopted by anyone. See also http://www.ontarionutrition.ca/cgi-bin/online/storepro.php and do a product search for Poon. FWIW, I'm not as sold on the metabolic diets that are keyed to blood type.

Here's a perspective on losing weight...
Do it for the right reasons. If it makes your life miserable most of the time, find a compromise imho... They ALL work, they ALL don't. Someone lost weight for every one of them. Find one that still leaves you happy inside I say... As a friend told me once... "Exercise, diet, die also what..." (Malaysian English = Manglish)
