If you look for a lot of quick effects - this set is not for you.
Tamariz's effects are long and structured. I currently perform his "neither blind nor silly", "cards accross" and "follow the leader" from his tapes. but the tapes give you much more than just tricks, if you are serious about magic you should see this living legend in action. I would recommend more his lectures from international magic. less effects but more theory. enjoy... |

I know the world thinks he's one of the great magcians, but I had this set and thought it stunk to high heaven. Magic is more than sleights-it's about entertaining and this guy has the longest, most boring plots.
That's just me. Chris

Although I enjoy Juan Tamariz very much, his style is going to appeal more to Spanish and other European cultures more than it will to Americans. In his home country, he's pretty much a household name, like Copperfield here in the US or Paul Daniels in the UK.
And also, if you watch the Lessons In Magic tapes, you'll see that Juan KNOWS magic is about more than sleights. Heck, Vol. 2 is subtitled "Magic and Emotion" if I remember correctly. Remeber that just because his style doesn't appeal to you, that doesn't mean it's BAD. -Jim

Chris,
I see where what you are talking about. A lot of his plots drag on for too long but, he does have some great magic. If you don't like the magic then at least you can get some ideas. I thought his Ace routine was the best ever invented. Thanks, Lee |

Hi,
I think often with Tamariz it is a matter of you either love or hate him, Personaly I find him hilarious and do not notice that the routines are overly long (though they are longer than I would perform) Phillip |

Should I get the Lecture videos instead of Lessons in MAgic HI, IF you want to see what Tamariz is really like and get a good dose of his theorys and some tricks the Two lecture video's from international are best.... If you are looking for tricks only then the lesons are better value to you... I prefer the International lectures but have them all. Phillip |

Another nice thing about the Tamariz lectures is that he doesn't teach all of the effects.
most people will find it annoying but I love it. usually the effects which are not taught are the killer ones. do yourself a favor and get those lecture tapes!!! |

don't judge Tamariz until you see him in person. His persona is infectuous and if you strudy the reactions of the people in his shots, you will see they are both engaged and entertained.

One comment about the tapes. Juan's accent is a bit thick, and you may have to rewind and listen a couple of times to get what he is saying.
As I recall, a number of effects require gaffs or gimmicks, and that may be a consideration for some. --Rick |

Hi,
I just got a look at the Lessons in Magic tape. I think there are a number of very strong effects including Neither Blind Nor Stupid, and especially his Four of a Kind routine which seems almost inexplicable. I can see how Tamariz's performance style isn't to everybody's taste, but I think watching him is a great lesson in how one can use one's own personality to create a unique performing persona. Personally, I enjoy watching Tamariz immensely. As for the long plots, watching him do the Centauros is clearly not MTV, but look at the effect that that piece had on the spectator. By the end of that eight minutes of enchantment, that spectator was ready to run off with Juan and elope. Tamariz had really touched her emotionally. Would that effect fool any magicians?--I doubt it, even I could follow it move for move, but that's not the point in this effect. There are plenty of other magician foolers on the tapes. The point here is the way that one can take something ordinary and give it maximum impact. Definitely worth studying and thinking about. Anyway, I recommend these tapes. Jack Shalom

I have lessons in magic vol. 2 and 3 and didn't care for them at all. Although Jaun is a funny guy those tapes are the worst ones that I ever bought

His magic is kinda long, but well structured, I had the VHS series and I bought it only for his perpendicul control that is all, I never perform his routines , so long. But he is an amazing magician. Not my style tho..

I like his style of magic, unfortunately the way he plays out his tricks doesn't fit the American culture. Even my mom felt that his cannible cards routine was too long but still amazing. A trick from Mnemonica, I think it was Total Memory with the half stack, was one of the coolest tricks. I tried it out and it was just too long. I only have volume 2 of his video series and I like it a lot. I use his trick Four of a Kind from that tape all of the time and it kills for laymen and magicians alike (he has this in Mnemonica under the name All of a Kind). His style may not be for all but the fact remains that his magic is unbeleivable when seen performed. That's one of the reasons I have trouble visualizing some of the tricks from Mnemonica, some you have to see him perform to understand why he has them structured the way they are. I loved that interview between Tamariz and Ascanio in Magic Magazine recently, it really made me understand why Tamariz is able to touch his audience emotionally and showed me why he has his performances drawn out the way he does. Still, some of the tricks he has only seem to look good in his hands. I think the tapes are worth it, I plan to get the other two as well as his lecture videos.
