If you do tricks for americans under the age of 30 you better keep things moving or you will have a emty room and terrible reviews
I like his stuff and its entertaining to watch but do not try it on a young crowd in the usa even if you are ricky jay, don't do it |

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of Neither Blind Nor Stupid which flows beautifully into another routine I do which packs an emotional punch.
I also just learned The Caricature and tweaked it a little bit, particularly the presentation, to make a romantic routine for my wife's birthday. She loves Juan Tamariz so I was able to tie him in nicely as well. Use your imagination like Juan does and you too will have your audience saying "AWWWWW!". Both of these routines are on Volume 1 of his Lessons of Magic videos. Thank you, Maestro! |

His enthusiasm is infectious. You want to perform with all his joy and playfulness, but if it's not you, it's not going to fly. I bet he kills with the kids too!

Long and structured? More like long and boring. Neverending visual and audio agony. I just watched these DVDs (on fast forward and had to skip jump many sections to make it bearable) and concluded that they were the biggest mistake I ever made in purchasing magic.
Whoever told Juan Tamariz that he is funny and entertaining has done the magic community as big a disservice as Juan Tamariz himself. I get it, he is a thinker, he has his Mnemonica contribution, but he is a disgrace to the magic community in my opinion. Paul Wilson actually has a very interesting lecture on The Perception of Magic and Magicians and I believe Juan Tamariz belongs in there with the reasons why magic's perception became so perverted over the years. I mean detach yourself as an external observer and judge as objectively as humanly possible if this is art. The screaming, the habit of startling the spectators (is this supposed to be funny?) the poor taste in clothing, the stupid looking hat, the hairdo (Dear God), the charisma (or lack thereof) of a kindergarten boy, compare all these to let's say...Channing Pollock. Top of my head. If I would see him approaching my table dressed like a poor fisherman I would just leave the venue. Not to mention on a stage. I mean look at the women in the audience, what do you think they think of him? And compare to how women in the audience look at Martin Nash, even in his late years. When you are a performer, you need to take care of your appearance too. Magic is not the tricks alone, it's everything. You have to breathe magic upon your spectators, to engulf them in magic, in a special kind of atmosphere, not make them feel like they are witnessing the Special Olympics. This is not magic and this is no art. I mean if any of you would see a young man just starting in magic, doing what he does, with no history in magic whatsoever in terms of putting out effects and thinking contribution, let's say at America's got Talent or Penn and Teller, you would be disgusted. But because he is Juan Tamariz I feel that the magic community feels compelled to give him praise with no merit. How can the community tolerate this and still let Juan Tamariz perform? And tell him that he's entertaining. I mean witness the last minute of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2nAoKePdbM The question that keeps popping up in my head is: WHY? Why force an audience onto something like this? As for the effects, they match his presentation. I didn't find anything to perform from these DVDs that don't have a better version somewhere else. And coming with a 2 meters long piece of cardboard to perform a downgrading effect with a toy car? Really? In your 60s? Something is not right there. And btw, on his AC routine on disc 3, if Fred Braue would see the pop up bent card phase he would twist in his grave. I feel sorry for whatever childhood Juan Tamariz must have experienced, but this should stop. He is the reason why magic lost elegance and became cheap entertainment. And no, Europeans don't stand for that charade. I am from Europe and this is not tolerable. If there would be a trick that I would perform for Juan Tamariz it would definitely be Dani Garcia's gag of smashing the cards in his head. Well, sorry, but this is my opinion. I think he would be a better performer if he would simply do magic to music and that's it. |
