NC Governor Bev Perdue:
Quote:
I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won't hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that. Is that how it will begin? With a temporary suspension? |

Or maybe just a joke?
"Come on," said spokeswoman Chris Mackey in a statement. "Gov. Perdue was obviously using hyperbole to highlight what we can all agree is a serious problem: Washington politicians who focus on their own election instead of what’s best for the people they serve." This reminds me of when the right wing media was up in arms last week http://rightwingnews.com/government-waste/welfare-rap/ about the rapper in a (obvious PARODY) video using a food stamps card to buy liquor and weed: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics......ody.html

Congress is disfunctional enough already. What makes you think they'll work harder if their jobs aren't on the line?

or Perdue might just be under too much stress:

It's now how it will begin but how it is.

What the republic needs is another Sulla. Or not.

I would say not, but since you say "another Sulla," who was this Republic's first Sulla?

I was thinking of the Sulla from about 100 BC.

Actually, I thought that was your point. I don't think that the United States have ever had a Sulla, although you might hear comparisons to Lincoln if you are visiting in Georgia. What we need is a Cincinnatus . . .

In 10 steps or less unemployment could drop by 85%, the national deficit could be paid off in less than 3 years, cars would get 200MPG, within 5 years we could cut consumption of fossil fuels by 80-90%, and our jail population would come in line with the rest of the industrialized world. If I know how to do it, then those in charge do as well. They simply lack the will to make it happen.

Sure you do Chance.
<edit> I should have said, "chance, this topic is about if she meant it when she said we should suspend elections. Please stay on topic. Mike |

They aren't original ideas. They don't have to be. There are plenty of real life examples to draw from.

Why would we want our jail population to "come in line with the rest of the industrialized world"?

If our current rate of unemployment is less than 20%, an 85% drop takes it to less than 3%. Ain't gonna happen. |
