I tend to favor "chink a chink" over matrix (the former uses no cards and the latter does if we can agree that Al Schneider's original effect means that cards and coins = matrix. Actually, Al Schneider's approach is called "Matrix" but the original idea can be traced to an effect called "The Sympathetic Coins" by Yank Hoe. This can be found in Bobo. It is NOT a Matrix in the style of Schneider and in fact one could really make a case that Matrix is at BEST a distant cousin and what's more, the Schneider approach is far superior).

As stated, the Al Schneider original IS really a great place to start and his book published earlier this year goes into great depth concerning the effect.

I am also quite fond of Shawn Farquhar's MatriXpress.

Ed Marlo has a very cool matrix effect in Apocalypse using dice and cards in Apocalypse. The dice are placed in the requisite corners; the numbers show 1-4 clockwise. Each die "arrives" by number.

In Richard Kaufman's book Coinmagic, Marlo has a whole chapter on Matrix.

In Doug Conn's book Tricks of My Trade (written by Paul Cummins), there is an effect called Cornered Coins. While not a Matrix, Cummins writes that the effect "is best employed just prior to a Matrix or Coins Through Table routine."

Even though the OP didn't ask, I thought I would offer just a few examples of chink a chink type of effects:

Horowitz Chink a Chink in Stars of Magic
Dean Dill's Swirl Assembly and Backfire in Apocalypse
David Roth's Chink a Chink in Apocalypse
Frank Thompson has a very cool version in Pallbearer's Review that uses bottle caps. I am working out a routine of my own based on this and Alex Lourido's "CAPtivated."

Obviously there are tons of other Matrix/Chink a Chink effects in the literature. The ones I mentioned immediately came to mind.

Ahimsa,
Vlad

Rannie, Very sweet. I can see it as part of a longer routine with coins and cards. Your style is so smooth and natural. I would like to be you when I grow up someday. ; )

When I went to Dean Dill to learn, he stated me out with Al Schneider's matrix. He told me it's the best coin routine ever, but the only problem is it's too short. Start with the classic routine and learn it well. Then....

Dean's "Extremre Dean" DVD set has an awesome collection of very strong matrix routines, and is extremely well taught. His DVD has an overhead view option that is a really helpful learning tool. he teaches each necessary sleights in separate lessons. If you are a serious student of coin magic, you will find this DVD to be a treasue.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Vinny, in 1981 I think Tom Gagnon published a book called
Sleightly Original, which extensively explored the use of one hand for matrix and other card and coin routines. I explored the reverse matrix concept, and my three best are on the NYCMS dvd series. Ultra Reverse Matrix is a no pick up move routine, extremely clean, no false moves, and was going to be in the new stars of magic series by Tannens until they pulled it at the last minute because it is gaffless. I don't think there is a cleaner routine anywhere, but you watch it and be the judge. I think it is also on either the coinvention dvd, or the lvmi dvd set.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

Paul Gertner, Mike Powers and Robert Bengal are a few that have excellent Matrix routines.

Gertner's is in his book. Bengel put out a smaller booklet. Mike had a stand alone effect that he use to sell with all the needed coins. I believe it's in one of his books as well. Used international coins.

Vinny, I am not home now but will look up the publisher for you this weekend. I don't think Tom posted a video. My routines are not one handed, I'm sorry if it read that way. I would love to post a clip, but no time until after the Milan symposium. Tom's moves are using diffferent techniques than you. I don't recall all the moves, but I do recall that he came up with some nice turnovers and displays. It's a great read, and a bit underground. Hope you get a chance to see it.
