I posted this short review on another board, and a couple of people suggested it might be of interest to people here as well. So, here it is:
Sean Taylor’s ANCHORS AHOY When I first read Sean Taylor’s version of David Hoy’s Tossed Out Deck in his book, MindStorms, I was impressed, but thought it was too much work for something I used as a quick opening effect. Last week, Sean proved me completely wrong. At a magic lecture I attended, he fooled everyone with this effect, and then explained it in full detail. The following evening, I saw him perform this effect for a lay audience who were completely blown away by it. Sean has turned the tossed out deck into a major feature item that has no explanation. Here is what the audience sees. Sean tosses a deck of cards to someone in the audience, and asks him to shuffle them thoroughly. After doing this, this person places a couple of rubber bands around the cards and tosses them back. Sean asks the audience to raise their hands, as he’s going to turn his back on them, and will then toss the deck out into the audience. He explains that the deck is heavy, and if people are not prepared, they might get hurt. Once they have their hands in the air, Sean turns his back and tosses the deck into the audience. The person who catches it, peeks at a card, and tosses it to someone else. After four people have peeked at a card, the deck is tossed back to Sean. He asks the people who peeked at a card to stand. He says that he usually does this effect with five people, so the deck is again tossed to someone who peeks at a card, returns the deck, and stands up. After some jokes and byplay, Sean writes the names of five cards on a pad, and holds it up. He asks the people standing to sit down if he’s listed their card. Four people sit down. Sean tells the fifth person that he found it hard to get her card, but he felt he was close. The person agrees that this is correct. Sean thinks for a moment, and changes the card from, say the six of diamonds, to the seven of diamonds. The person sits down, and Sean receives a round of applause. That is the basic effect. There is much more to it than that, and I loved the subtleties Sean has invented that make the effect even more convincing. I was fortunate enough to see Sean perform and explain this effect in his lecture, and even more fortunate to see how powerful it is for a lay audience. At the lecture I was delighted to learn that Sean has released a 50-minute DVD called Sean Taylor’s Anchors Away: The Working Professional’s Tossed Out Deck that explains every detail and nuance of this effect. This high quality, professionally produced DVD starts with Sean performing this effect in a show. He and his friend Richard Paddon then discuss and explain all the details, convincers and subtleties that Sean has developed over the last ten years. If you currently perform any version of the tossed out deck, you’ll find Sean’s take on this effect invaluable. If you’ve never performed it, Sean’s DVD will convince you to add it to your act. Highly recommended. |
