The Coin Retention Pass is probably one of my best friends in Coin magic, but still it is far from perfect.
l heard David Roth is as good as it gets. Does anyone know if he has given out any videos teaching this?

Don't know about Given Eirik, though it should be on his videos.
In person, the move is quite impressive. He did it for me a few times with a borrowed silver dollar, where the coin seemed to be sticking up out of his left hand for the 'burn'. wow It's a good move, but just remember that folks should see where the coins are. Under fire, no move is really 100 percent.

Eirik,
David Roth teaches his retention pass on Volume 2 of his Expert Coin Magic Made Easy videos. Another excellent variation of the retention pass is Michael Rubenstein's R.O.P.S technique. These can be found on his Knockout Coin Magic DVDs and the Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights DVDs.

I'd have to agree, I love the retention pass. The spectators REALLY believe they saw the coin get put into the hand and that it was in the hand after the hand closed. The second the coin is shown to have vanished it just floors them.

I love the retention pass as well. I think it's a real fooler, but here is some food for thought...some Magicians think the retention vansish places too much emphasis on the vanish itself, instead prefering to treat a coin vanish as nothing more than putting the coin in the hand while going on to other thing(i.e a finger palm or Classic Vanish)...What do you guys all think?

I love the retention pass but stopped playing with the R.O.P.S. move. That just didn't fit me. My magic buddies really liked it when I did it for them but when I would do it for myself in front of a mirror it seemed to look like exactly what I was doing, maybe it's because I knew that I was just taking it I don't know. Anybody else have this problem?

It is also explained in great detail in Roth's lecture in London tape. John Cornelius has some work on retendion pass on Michael Ammar classic rendition series. Gary Kurtz has some good points on it on his videos.
About using it, I like to think like Greg Wilson. It doesn´t look what it really would look if you but a coin in to your hand. It puts too much attention to coin. I can do it in my opinion very well, but I don´t use it very often... |

The R.O.P.S. move is not intended to look like a "move." It should look like you just tapped the coin to indicate its presence. Anything more will telegraph what you are doing. The move is done on the second tap, that is only implied - the spectators never see you actualy tap the coin the second time, because that is when your hand is closing. Good luck, Mike

I agree, Almost everytime I have seen magicians doing a routine when they get ready to do the R.pass they pause as if they want to show off how well they can do the move (Kinda like some will wait until everyone is watcing to do a pass with a deck of card) korttihai_82 I can do it in my opinion very well, but I don´t use it very often... I love this move. It is very illusive, I mean you can visually see the coin go into the hand and your close your hand around it. It doesn't really get any cleaner than that.

It's kind of a double edged sword - it may be that your intuition is right and that it is blatantly obvious what you are doing, but you never can tell until you start recording it on camera. Get a video camera and perform it over and over - mix it up with some actual placements of the coin into the hand and if you can fool yourself when you watch back over it, you have got the move down.
May your moral compass guide you true - South West is where the honourable man fare. Pity those who lose their way...

I've posted my opinion on the R.O.P.S. move publically a number of times and will continue to post -- it's a FANTASTIC retention vanish.
I know a number of retention vanishes, and would like to think that I perform all of them reasonably well, so I experimented and can tell you that absolutely nothing beats the audience reaction I get from R.O.P.S. in a particular routine. Larry D. |

I do agree, R.O.P.S is a great vanish (timing is essential to make it look natural though), But I just wonder...since there are so many different routines on the basic retention pass, maybe someone that is much more skilled than me (Michael Rubinstein, love your handling with coins) should put together a video teaching the basics and many other variations of this? - or maybe there already exists a video like this out there???

Hi Eirik, my DVD series, the Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights, has a section on R.O.P.S. technique, and a section on retention passes (my own, variations, and a few that others have developed and published), along with some performing tips.

Hi Michael,
You did a vanish for me at the New York Magic Symposium in the early '80s that floored me. I'm trying to recall what it looked like. All I remember was that it really looked impossible. The coin WAS THERE but then it wasn't! You weren't tipping the method and I don't believe it's in your book. Is this the R.O.P.S. that's under discussion above?? Mike

Hey Mike, how's it going! That's exactly the move I was doing back then. You were doing the hole trick with the cards at the time, I recall. Good to hear from you! I never published the technique for the masses, just in my lectures and on my tape/DVD series.

Bon journo Mike! I still have that moment etched into my brain. I had no clue. BTW - is that the move that Chris Korn teaches in his lecture? (He credits you but I don't recall the moving having a name.)

BTW, this is perfect for a complete coin vanish ala Grostami (yet another vanish)
