I think it probably would have been better to wait till she was old enough to fully accept such a decision.

The concern over suicide has much less to do with when she goes through a procedure, and more to do with the support and acceptance they receive.
While they have little control over such at school, even less so at public schools, her parents have much more control over the atmosphere at home.

If his parents had been kangaroos, he would have been named Joey.

Oh, then she might not need to change her name.

On a more serious note, having thought about it some more, and read up on it more, although I'm still, of course, hesitant about making such drastic decisions when so young, I have changed my mind here.

This would seem to be what is best for her.
