According to Zeno, never. An argument like that has its limits, however.

Best answer I've come across to that question:
A Friendly Chat About Whether 0.999... = 1

wooooooooow

Care to expand on that a bit? (I'm being serious.) Did you find the article helpful? confusing? provocative? all of the above?

John

I found it both helpful and thought-provoking.

John, I found that article as D, all of the above. I am not that good at math, which should be obvious, but I love the concepts of it, the basic idea behind it-if that makes sense. The phrase "The meaning of 0.999… depends on our assumptions about how numbers behave." really meant a lot while reading his explanation.

And John, as you can see from my facebook, not everyone knows the answer-one of those who thinks not was a middle school principle in my city for 30+ years.... And, of course, a 16 year old got it right, first post...

Kinda tough to decide after the distance gets down to something on the order of ten to the minus thirty of an inch. So forty seconds later you get ... ?

Depends on what you'd call the difference.

Is there no difference? An insignificant difference?

Or in plain English, could you tell one from the other?

These are all good to know. I could tell that you were curious after the first couple of posts, but I wasn't sure what the article would mean to you. I'm pleased that found it interesting. It does make you wonder what kind of sense we can make of repeating decimals. What does it mean to add up an infinite number of things? (.9+.09+.009+.0009+...)

As a long-time math teacher, I found that this question always fascinated some students. The powerful intuition is that they CAN'T be the same. Most are convinced by the argument I gave above. Some are not. Those that are still bothered the next day have the potential to become mathematicians.

Now that is a good answer. I like that.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

That last one was actually the reveal at the end of a "Black Widowers" episode Isaac Asimov wrote.

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the "other side"... See!!! The chicken, being smart, knew he would be killed-he wanted to make it to the "other side". Maybe he had laid his last egg, or his favorite show was cancelled.

I told my girlfriend that joke last night and ended up having to make a model to explain why it was funny.
