I want to add a few silk magic tricks to my list. I like close up magic.

Any suggestions?

Greetings and Salutations,

While you're at the shop, check out any videos by Duane Laflin. He specializes in kid and gospel magic but his effects are generally easy, cost-effective, and he's a good teacher. Create your own patter for the effects and you're on your way.

My $.02 (USD) worth.

Since your real interest is close up, look at Glorpy and the Glorpy threads on The Magic Café. It is a good one to use after cups and balls too!

Enjoy!

If you want to add two great silk effects (these are classics), learn:

20th Century Silks
Sympathetic Silks

With the blazingly beautiful Rice silks, these two effects are highly recommended!

Hope this helps a bit!

Doug,

Since you just got Vol. 3 of the Rice Encylopedia Of Silk Magic, did you have any idea there would be 104 pages of material just on Sympathetic Silks?

You are going to be a busy man!

Check out the Openers section.

Roth has a great coin/silk routine. He talks of it in his Sacremento Lectures.

Check out Duane Laflin's web site http://www.laflinmagic.com. He has some great silk magic. Get a couple of his silk videos, I highly recommend them.

Hi 12345:

There are a number of silk effects that can be done close up. Can you tell us more about what really interests you? Something that you'll do sitting at a table or perhaps in a strolling situation where you don't have time to reset the effect?

Here's a few ideas:

1. Classic vanishing silk - a small silk vanishes in your hand or rolled up dollar bill. Uses a TT.

2. Color changing silk - a silk is tucked into your hand and comes out the other side a different color. Hand is shown empty. There are a number of handlings by people like Ron Wilson, Frank Balcerzak, and Billy McComb. It really is a great trick.

3. Slydini Silk - spectator ties silks together, but magically, the knots keep coming undone.

4. Blendo - there are some small blendo silk effects where different colored silks are tucked into your hand and blend into a multi-colored silk.

Tell us more about what you're interested in, and we can come up with more specific idea. Hope this helps get you started.

Whoa...busy? A GOLD MINE of material. I should have had this whole 3-vol set 20 years ago. I almost cry, when I see what could have been done. My collection of Rice silks was retired WAY too soon!

New to silk magic? The Rice Encyclopedias...must have. Remember, I just have Vol. 3...I cannot even imagine what I'm going to find in Vol's 1 & 2... Smile

Doug,

Bring your lunch! After over forty years, I still get an idea a week from Rice's set of books. You're going to be too busy to know how busy you are.

Enjoy!

I was in this thread just nine years ago. Guess what? It's still the case!

Learning from Rice is addictive. The old art professor was fabulous! We were so lucky to have him.

If you can find the Rice books today...vol 3 is still available at Silk King Studios. The other volumes...yikes. Out of my price range! I had all FOUR volumes before the foreclosure. I wonder if I'll ever replace them...

I made a rare trip to Toronto this summer and found a new Vol 4 at Morrissey's. So, now I have all 4 volumes. Yes, I know Rice was not involved in Vol 4, but it is still a good book to have.

Pavel has great silk effects on videos. I do not know if any are on DVD.

There is a CD-Rom containing all 4 volumes of Rice's Encylopedia Of Silk Magic

The CD-rom is very defective. The OCR did not work from the handlettered originals.

Hi Ruth! Long time! How ya be? Smile Thank you for the kind words!

Yeah, I am PRAYING those books are in the third box. My most important books are the 4 Rice books, the Bobo book, and my 21st Century Coin Mechanics book, by Larry Barnowski.

I believe there are more books, but I can't think of them right now. Those Rice books, though...GOTTA have those!
