I have a chance to buy a Jumbo Sidekick that uses the gun at a very reasonable price. It turns out to be cost prohibitive to have it switched over to the "no gun" method. I am really stuck on the purchase of this. I would love some advice. This would be considered for corporate, college, and adult shows only.
1. Do you consider it bad business (as in getting referrals and rebookings) to have a gun on stage, no matter how respectfully you treat it? 2. Is there anyway to make the gun less threatening seeming? 3. Am I just being to much of a liberal hippy about his? 4. Is there any other method of activating the trick without the gun that doesn't give the method away? 5. Is there any way to modify this trick to the "no gun" method that wouldn't cost $450? I know this is a lot of questions but please, help. Thanks, Edd

Edd,
One of these might work: http://www.magicsupply.com/product.php?productid=640 I have never ordered from this company before, so I don't know if they are reliable, but the prop might work to trigger the prop. Sincerely, David

Performing as Mulee Pete (more than a name, it's an attitude) I have used the SideKick II for 10 years. I also trick shoot, whip crack, throw knives and demonstrate fancy gun handeling. Mainly in Utah. I have taken my .45's into schools, hospetials, parks....all over. I tell the booker what I do and explain my bonafides to handle them. I have a 5 min skit on gun safety for adults and kids, telling them pistoles are my tools, like a carpenter or plummer, and are not toys. Parents have told me how much they appreciate my instruction.
Even though I use primers only with the SideKick II, I keep very strick control of the pistol. NEVER let a man(too cocky) or young person(too unstable) or child(bad image). I always use a lady, telling her she is playing the part of Annie Oakley. Made up a special gunbelt and holster for the gun to stay in when not in use. That and a Hat styled after the real Miss Oakley's sets the mood. Stress SAFETY, act correctly with a weapon. Folks will pick up on your professionalism and not be bothered by a pistol in the act. I cannot stress enough though, safe gun handeling, always. Side Kick II is also re***e co*****d. You could use a wand or any thing to "make the magic". I have used a whip to perform the act. Did not work as well as the shooting. This my experience and advice with SideKick II. If I can be of any other assistance please PM me or email. Mulee Pete I Have Embrased My Inner Jack@$$ |

Edd,
For the right audience and with a great routine (like Mulee Pete's!)I am sure it would be fine. However, there are venues where you won't be able to perform it. You have to ask yourself if it is worth the investment, not just of money, but time, developing and polishing the routine. Will you have enough opportunities to perform it. Finally, if you have any doubts about how it will be received, that will affect your performance. I like to have complete confidence and enthusiasm for anything I present onstage. If I am worried about anything, it is hard to sell it to an audience. My old rule is: "When in doubt, leave it out." Jim |

Mulee Pete and Jim are spot on. If you can find a way to activate it without the gun, then that will fit well into those venue where the gun would be prohibited. As far as using the gun is concerned, make sure you fit it into the act because if not, it will look out of place. As Pete said, stress safety over all, and stress that it is a tool for your use - not a toy and never to be handled as such.

Ah yes the world of political correctness. it will be the death of america one day,.
but to answer your question- yes I think its worth getting and yes I do think there are times that the gun should not be used and a bang wand is a great option. of course with the R***e C*****l any thing can be used. JIm does make a good point that if you are doubting it then let it go. if you think you can make a great routine and know your audiences that you are playing for then go for it. have two routines one for shcools or audiences that you rather not use a gun for and one that you do use the gun. the key here is to know your audience and work up a performance worthy of the effect good luck ps I use fire, knives, and even dangerous wait for it... balloons in shcools churches and well pretty much all my shows. never had a problem never had a complaint. its all inthe presentaion in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I will pass on this offer and wait until I can afford one that is r***** c******. The bang wand suggested above could be a possibility but I've never seen a bang wand that actually works!
Thanks again everyone. Edd
