Hi,

Please advise where I can purchase cheap vent dolls. (Eg. head , eyes must be able to move)

There's cheap vent "dolls" that have a string out the back of the neck to move the mouth, but when you get into head and eye movement, then you are talking vent "figures", and cheap.....cheap in figures is if you can get ahold of one for two or three hundred dollars, and then your best option is ebay, but even that's been tough. I don't know what's going on, but lately I've been seeing some lower priced figures selling for more than they probably should.

I totally agree with blueshawk1! IF you want a "cheap" figure that has animations like moving mouth and side to side moving eyes (at the least), then buying a used figure off Ebay or one of the vent forum classifieds or Craig's List (if you are so lucky) is about the only way you'll get one for under $1,000 AND then you'll still not be getting a figure made by one of the more notable figure makers MOST of the time. That's NOT saying you can't get a GOOD quality figure because there are frequently good figures on Ebay for around $500 or a tad less. Anything LESS than that probably won't serve you all that well and could end up souring you on becoming a vent. Quality figures have superb and SMOOTH operation features and the workmanship of the head paining/sculpturing is usually top notch too. Look for a "deal" on a used figure and you'll be far better off in the long run, IMHO.

Cheapest vent figures with eye movement... hmmmm. Would have to say you can get one of Clinton Detweiler's modified Charlie's for around $350 new... I don't know what they go for used. If you want a full size vent figure, probably the cheapest way to go is buy one of Mike Brose's kits and build it yourself. As of this writing, head $54, hands $22, eyes $16 - $25, eye tray (if you want one) $16, cast body (if you don't want to build your own) $52, feet (if you want them) $24... So that's $193 at the top end. Plus stuffed arms and legs and paint and wig. So you can make your own about the same and customize it the way you want, change features, etc. I believe the Fred project is still up at Al Steven's site and some resources on line at Mike's site, all free info. Or you can add Mike's book for $39 and have even more resources.

Point is, if you want a nice figure at a low price, it may be beneficial to build it yourself. You can do it in a couple weeks pretty easily depending on what you want to add or change.

Hope this helps,

I've never personally operated a Payes figure, but they do look good... lots of character and the price is right. That might be another way to go about getting a low cost figure. I think they occasionally come up for sale on eBay as well.

I had a Payes years ago, an early Preston model, it was a very decent low priced figure. His figures on ebay usually seem to go over three, usually around the the three and a half mark, but there have been a couple I've seen go for less than three.

The description of that figure is only accurate in that those figures were sold through Maher, but it is actually a Lovik. I don't know what they've done to that figure, but this is what those figures looked like new;

In the condition that one on ebay is in, I think they are dreaming asking that much for it.

Dave,
I should have added, "NEEDS WORKS" But look where he's been, Hawaii, Norfolk, Va, Cuba, Haiti, Italy, Spain and many other ports-of-call. I think it was the port-of-calls that did him in.

Wow... Thanks a lot for the wonderful pourdown of information.

I believe now , the cheapest vent figures are at : http://www.throwthings.com/item.asp?id=399 which has near to all the complete movements. BUT I am just crossing my fingers to say that these puppets are not too small on stage.
I have emailed the supplier and waiting for the reply for the size of the vent doll.

Yes, a lot of people find that throwthings site right off, and like Wanlu said, they are converted figures, and as Donald said, 30" is small - too small for an adult in my opinion.

My first vent figure was one made by Steve Barry and it was only around $350 with shipping if I remember correctly. It was a well made figure and easy to operate. Steve sells them on Ebay from time to time. I sold that figure to a girl in New York and she was elated to get it!

Here's a nice Glen Rappold built Brose kit on ebay. The bidding hasn't gotten too high. It looks like it might need some simple repair.

Keith Lovik, Craig's son has a line of nice starter figures too.

I remember looking at this link before, and the only thing you could get was the "front page" with his picture. I see now there's more, but it's still not quite right. Click on the about or order links, and the text disappears in the box, there's obviously supposed to be more there, but you can't see it.
Anyway, I'm glad there's more there than there was, contact info too, because I have have a few of his father's figures, and have had some others over the years. If they are anything like his father's figures, and I'm sure they are, I would have no trouble recommending them to people.
