I have the hardest time with silks and the palmo. Silks seem to bunch up so much it's hard to get a grip on the palmo to pull it away. Any suggestions of how to handle the palmo when it is stuffed and is there a way to get silks in the palmo that don't produce such a tight fit? When I see Duane Laflin or others do it they make it look so effortless. I use mostly 18" silks. Laflin says the 3 should fit in the Palmo but I run into the problems I mentioned previously. Thanks for the help.
Thanks. |

Krowboom are you using diamond cut silks? An 18" silk takes no more room than a 12" silk.

One point on the Palmo is that there are different makes. Rice's original is still available and I prefer it to the one Duane sells. It is sleightly smaller. No matter which you use if you load it full you cannot do the thumb kickout move.
To get more space, you can do a couple of things. 1) Go to diamond silks. I don't like to use diamond in this case but it is an option. 2) Go to a lighter momme weight. If you are using 8 momme silks, it is going to take lot more room than a 6 momme. 3) Go down one size in silks. In this case, go from from an 18" silk to a 15". There was also a technique of rotating a hank ball as you load the silks. This might also work with a Palmo. Richard

To Bowers, for the effect I'm doing a diamond silk doesn't work well.
Peter Posted: Oct 12, 2011 12:45pm Hugmagic - what is the thumb kick out move? Thanks. Peter |

Thumb sticks in hole and kicks it out into the other hand.

I had some 3mm silks once and they left a lot of extra room. So much room I went back to Rice standard silks.

I'm doing knots off silk then a color change using the palmo. I need a full size silk to do knots off silk.

Pretty cool combination. I've never felt confident using the palmo. I just stick with Duane's regular dye tube for basic color changes.

I'm a Palmo FREAK, Krowboom!
I think Richard is right on, as far as momme goes. I had three 18" silks that fit perfectly for production. For a simple color-change, though, two silks were what I used. A double color change would work with three, but it was a bit tight. Go with lighter momme, as Richard said. That's good advice! Doug |

Does momme matter much? I mean 6 momme to 8 momme. Is there that much difference when packing silks in a Palmo (or dye tube)? I need to educate myself. I should probably buy one of each momme so I know what I'm dealing with.
I don't know what Rice silks are, momme-wise. That's what I had for over thirty-five years. I could pack three 18" in a Palmo (tight fit). I used the Palmo for a color change or production. Would Krowboom be better off using lighter momme to pack more in? My thinking is the lighter the momme, the more sheer and flimsy the silk. Whatever the Rice silks were, they lasted thirty plus years! Doug |

Most Rice silks are 6 or 8 momme. Some of the heavier zombie silks were 12 momme.
If it is an older silk, it can wear down so it fits like a smaller momme silk. An 8 momme can feel like a 6. To answer your question, yes momme can make a great deal of difference. Richard

Thank you Richard!
So Rice's are 6-8, interesting. Maybe the idea of using 15" silks may be the alternative! |

A good half dyed silk routine uses a set of 3 15" silks. These work very well with the palmo.

Duane Lafin has some great DVDs teaching silk magic with the dye tube palmo and hank ball.

I have several of Duane's Palmos and like them, but just ordered a Rice's Palmo, and I'm looking forward to using it since it should be a bit heavier as its made from brass.

I'm thinking of getting either a tube or a palmo for a birthday party I have coming up in October. I'd love to do a three color change. This will be done close up/parlor in a friend's home for about 20 people. What do you guys recommend? What I'd like to do is possibly change from say black to white to polka dotted. Or red to white to striped. Something to that effect. What would work best for that environment size-wise. Or does it even make a difference? Thanks you in advance.
I'd love to do it effortlessly like this guy: http://youtu.be/Bm3NQVVcI_Q

The young man was using a Tape Dye Tube, straight ended and the Pat Page Routine for the Color Changing Handkerchief.
The only one making a Straight Tape Dye Tube I http://www.morrisseymagic.com , they also make a rolled edge as well. There is difference in the manipulation of straight edge and the rolled edge dye tubes. This effect can be done with the rolled edge or the Rice Palmo or simplex Dye Tubes as well. He was using 12" silks, and not the 15" or 18" most people like to use. 12" is good, I hear for close-up. Generally, dyeing 3 silks require 2 dye tube and a switch. That routine is Bev Taylor's routine will accomplish this. If you look at other thread you will see there are a number of routines available for the hand dye tube. |
