Just wanted to share something I'm doing on FaceBook, in case any one here is there. I've been promoting my FanPage at shows to build a following. The key is trying to come up with reasons for people to like the page and then check back on occasion.

One idea was to create some custom short videos to share that can only be viewed by fans. Started with Birthday videos - and now moving on to music videos. People are creating short songs about my act and I'm laying the tracks down behind video. They'll be released over the next month. The first came out yesterday...

Tom,

I'm not on Facebook, but that's a great idea. Good luck!

Can't blame you Keith. It does suck time. But it is cool to see what certain people are doing and a lot of people use it - so marketing-wise, it makes sense...

Like Keith, I'm not a fan of facebook, but you're right, it is used by a LOT of people, so it only makes sense for you to use it as another avenue for promotion too.

I actually was on last year for about 3 months. It was great catching up with old friends, but, man, did I spend a lot of time on there! So, instead of getting a divorce, I decided to leave Facebook! I'm using hyperbole, of course, but it did suck up a lot of time.

I think I signed up for it about two years ago, maybe a little less. My sister sent the invite and I thought it would be good, maybe we would keep better in touch - we don't (she's not much for writing or emails). The worst part was, it made it easier for people to find me that I could have really lived happily the rest of my life not hearing from. And people getting on there posting every little thing they do every day, okay, that's interesting....and not exactly something I feel the need to do. So I pretty much kicked it to the curb, I only go on there if I have to, like a friend has posted pictures I'd like the see, etc.

Alrighty then. Sorry I posted this. It was more about various promotional techniques than a plug for or a slap at FaceBook.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa! The heck with those other guys. I'm very interested!

I'm using FaceBook to try to promote myself and I want to benefit from your experience. I did not get any sound on the clip, though.

Please keep posting, Tom.

I too like face book for promotoing Ventriloquist Central. It reaches far and wide and I must admit I too do not like the unwanted social networking but Facebook is a part of life today and if you want EVERYONE to know about you it is a must. Keep posting Tom!!

Sorry Tom, I didn't mean to rain on your parade.
I did say in my first post since so many people are on it, it was a good idea.

Hmmm - not sure why you didn't get sound Bob. You are the first. Maybe its one of your settings? Did you check out any of my others to see if you had audio?

Oh - and I liked the second one so much, I actually placed it on my Gigmasters profile as the second clip. (so now you guys who aren't on FaceBook can get a look if you want...)

I went to the gigmasters site and looked - was it the Laugh so hard or the music one?
I watched them both anyway, they were both very good (and the audio worked fine for me).

Great idea Tom! I think facebook is a really interesting marketing tool. Mailing lists are great but unfortunately emails and letters often get overlooked. Facebook is something that people use to distract themselves from work. I think, therefore, it is great to use your fan page as a bit of fun, something that your fans can visit and see pictures and videos and dynamic content, rather than just information about what you do and where you are performing next. The beauty of a fb page over a website is that it is far more interactive and when people are able to interact with us they feel more connected to our shows.

You really know your stuff when it comes to marketing Tom. I'm very impressed with the ideas you come up with.

I have a personal Facebook page and a promotional page. To be honest, I haven't taken the time to really put it to work for me. I know that Tom and Neale update regularly and keep themselves on the radar. I love this idea though, Tom.

Wow Wanlu - 10,000 fans! That TV exposure has really raised your visibility, congratulations on your success. I'm still around 1,040 or something like that.

I've stopped accepting "Friends" on my personal page if I don't actually know them. People have seen my show and contacted me, but I refer them to the fan page. No one needs to see personal stuff if they don't actually have the personal connection. Its not a contest for me. In fact, I know I could start kicking folks off - but that seems kind of rude. The fan page is something I want to really build though. I'm not sure how much business I can trace back to social marketing - but I do know I've sold tickets and had people come to see me based on those posts. And the cross posting feature really adds to your visibility as long as it isn't abused.

Sarah - great clarification of my goal - interactivity & connection. I just do this stuff - I never think of what to call it. I've tried getting people to upload video of the human puppets to my page but haven't had much success. I'd love to get people adding to the content, which helps place the page on auto-pilot.

Blueshawk1 - It was the "Laugh So Hard - The Music Video" - runs about 40 seconds.

One thing I have noticed on the custom songs - they like to say your name. Guess that's what makes it custom. And for those who liked what they saw - stay tuned. I'm working on some really fun, stupid things to keep the page moving.

"....fun, stupid things....." are fun.
Will you also be posting those on the gigmasters page?
