Happy Possum Day everyone!

Today is the day. October 13th.

Who's your choice for Possum Queen? Granny, Granny.
She don't ride no limousine, Granny all the way.

Yeah, and there is nothing like waking up on a steamy, Alabama July morning to find one that tried to invade the yard during the night and the dog found before you did. It usually happens the day after the trash ran. Finding something to do with it can leave you hating possums.

Well, you do have a trashcan... I'm not saying you should drown it... No, no, that would be mean. Forget it. Forget it.

No... Imagine that is was already full of holes (from the dog), laying there, and somewhat over there, too... not "playing" possum. Now imagine that it is already 95 degrees, near 100% humidity and still early in the day. The trash doesn't run again for 5 or 6 more days...

It tends to leave you in a lurch. Smile

Hmmm. Maybe I'll be content with skunks and porcupines.

I am a fan of hedgehogs. I like the little kind. Squirrels are probably my favorite of the varmint type animals though.
We have a really lot of wild turkeys around my house. Turkeys are pretty fugly too, but much better than possums. We still like to see the turkeys.

Skunks are cool, and some people keep domesticated skunks as pets.

I've noticed the brown squirrels here in Illinois are much larger than the skinny gray ones down south.

Well, here it is October 14th... so we survived another Possum Day. It's finally over and we can go back to our normal lives again... unless of course other plans are on the agenda!

At the Bighorn show way back in the day there was a vendor who had a fat raccoon as a pet. I had never seen a raccoon so docile. Maybe because it was so fat. My friend Tienne unloaded an entire clip from her husband's .22 into a raccoon once and it still took forever to die. (It was killing her chickens, had it coming.)

I get on very well with possums - delightful animals. The place I stay at when I'm working in the state capitol, Brisbane, is managed by a mature aged American couple and the wife is quite sure possums are the most dangerous animal on Earth. A few months ago I rescued 3 English sportsmen who were too scared to put their keys in the gate because a baby possum about 7 inches long was sitting on the fence nearby. Big burly blokes standing timidly outside in the rain at midnight, about 15 feet from the little cutie calling "Shoo, shoo" because the manageress had warned them how dangerous Australia's man eating possums are.

A next door neighbor found a baby raccoon and kept it as a pet. It was cool and fun to play with... then it hit puberty. The thing went totally postal in its cage (very large, walk-in cage). It was everything the guy could do to release it without getting killed. (I guess he had it coming, too! Ha!)

Saw a dead porcupine on the side of the highway this morning and remembered John talking about porcupines. Was sad. That porcupine probably did not have it coming. Big one too. Hope it had a good life.

But, the hell with possums.

We lose a lot of fine porcupines that way. Sad.

Um.. ok... a lot of animal talk, but nothing to do with Possum Day.

Possum Day was a holiday that the Beverly Hillbillies always celebrated.
October 13th was the day in history that the first Possum Day episode aired.

So according to Beverly Hillbillies fans, that is when Possum Day is.

Now for something on the creepy side.
On the episode, there is a secretary with black hair in it.
The black hair is a wig, and that woman is the actress Sharon Tate.

You can watch it on youTube... just search.

Very few possums here compared to down south. Raccoons here though, are sometimes as big as bear cubs. I try to bang on things if I'm going to approach the trash cans at night. I don't want to accidentally corner one of those monsters.

There are a few skunks around here... you smell them but rarely see them. No porcupines that I've seen. Also some other critter... looks like a big fat squirrel with not much a tail. I haven't figured those things out because they scoot off too quickly. I think they might be woodchucks.

One odd thing when I lived in Birmingham... we started to get a bunch of armadillos laying around as road kill. It used to be that you'd have to travel far enough south in the state that moss was hanging from the trees. I guess their habitat is spreading north... either global warming or too many hurricanes near the coast.

Edit: I missed the last couple posts as I was typing, but I am also familiar with the Beverly Hillbillies connection. I did not know about Sharon Tate, though.

Most of the folks in Spokane are not aware that we have black widows and rattlesnakes. People just don't get outside enough.

You wouldn't if you'd ever seen one in person. Ugliest ever. Seriously. I trapped one under a milk crate once and for a second I thought I'd caught the chupacabra. This thing was hideous beyond belief.

You are breaking my heart!
That sentiment is pure possum sacrilege and species-ism! I love the possum and would raise 1000 babies if I had the time. I have fostered so many orphaned baby possums you would not believe. They are smart, clean and awesome! Smile I LOVE the possum!
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Where in the Blackfeet Nation do you have possums? My geography and/or Siksika knowledge must be lacking.
