S&M is one of my fave books. It's out of print now and AOA isn't so you might want to get S&M first.

How many effects are in Smoke and Mirrors? Is it mostly card tricks?

There are 31 effects in Smoke and Mirrors, I think there are about 5 non-card tricks.
I highly recommend this book, in fact anything by Bannon is a must.

I'll tell you a critical thing with John Bannon's books that I find compared to others.

With other books (I've got a fair few now) I tend to dart around to find a trick that I think may be worth my time investing in. This is true of the AOA books (which I really enjoy and are an entertaining read in their own right).

The difference with John Bannon's books are that they really are worth working through from start to finish. Even if a particular trick is not to my style, the premise and techniques (and often simplicity) are first class.

Given a choice and limited funds, I would go for John Bannon's books over AOA IF you are a cards person.

I'd recommend the AOA books thereafter. Both are good examples of the side-ways thinking that is required to create good magic.

All the best,

Beetroot

Great! That’s the kind of advice I was looking for. I now feel I should have all 4 books. Does anyone know of a good place to purchase Smoke n Mirrors?

I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago from Geniimagizine.com, Kaufmand and Company Books and Videos. I ordered on line on 9/29 and received the book in the mail a week later. First edition. This is a wonderful book. http://www.geniimagazine.com/kaufmanandco/booksandtapes.html

I think I saw a copy at Denny & Lee. It's in the Card Books section under "John Bannon's Smoke and Mirrors Book."

Got mine at Christmas from Keith Bennett in the UK. I don't seem to be able to access his website just now (www.kbmagic.co.uk I think). If you do a search for keith bennett magic on Google you can look at the "cached" information from which you can get contact details and see if he can help.

Hope your search is fruitful,

If you see it on a website the odds are that they will not have it when you call them. Ebay is the best place to pick one up. 2 copies have sold on ebay in the last month. Both sold for around $45 bucks.
