Hi Guys
I have a question about pocket management and was hoping some of you guys could make so,me suggestions. As pocket space is limited, how do you carry the rest of your general things such as your mobile, your keys, spare change/money etc. I ask because by the time U have organised approx 7 effects I don't have much room left for anything else. Therefore a couple of pockets have to have additional items in which can make getting hold of certain things secretly a little bit tricky. Have you any additional tips to carry these extra yet essential items around? (I hope that makes sense) Many Thanks |

I carry a doctor's bag for my set to the venue where I'm performing. Upon my arrival at the venue, my set is taken out of my doctor's bag and is carried on my person. Everything else that is not related to my set goes into my doctor's bag such as my keys, change, wallet etc for storage.
When I perform, I wear clothes that are dedicated to magic. Be it my sports coat, slacks or expensive suit, everything is tailored for magic as I have additional pockets and other secret things sewn into my dedicated magic clothes. When I'm done performing, my set comes out and goes back into my doctor's bag and everything else is returned to my person and back into it's proper place. |

Thanks for the tips, they're appreciated.
The way that I work is usually to be set up prior to getting to the venue as not everywhere provides you with a place to change and store your items. However it is definitely worth looking into your suggestion for the venues that do offer a secure place for storage. All other ideas are still welcome. |

All venues have bathrooms. It's a simple matter to utilize them to make the change. And I have never been to a venue where there was no place to keep my doctor's bag. That's not to say it can't happen, but so far it has always worked out for me there was a place for it. If I were to perform at a venue where there is absolutely no place to keep my doctors bag, I would take it to my car and lock it up. Personally, I would be very uncomfortable traveling to a venue completely ready to go.

I carry all of my props and backups in a bag like this
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-......Id=10053 Sometimes I preload my pockets in the car especially if it is a private party at someones house but most of the time I do it at the gig. I have a small zippered bag that I put all my stuff in like car keys and such. That has saved me a ton of frustration looking for my car keys! |

I have a wand that goes into a special "wand pocket" in my suit as well. I have no spare change. if I did, it would not be on my person during a performance. I carry as little as possible: ninja rings, ropes, deck o cards, sponge bunnies, sponge balls. those can easily get me thru a 4 hr. nite

I was at a bar last night with pockets like this:
* Hypnotic choice, WOW 2 up, WOW 2 down, WOW 2 ungimmicked in my top jacket pocket * Farttoon in my left jacket pocket * Rising card in my right jacket pocket * One regular deck in each back pocket * Wallet and phone in my front right pocket * Packet trick and coin wallet in my front left pocket It was a little tight, but I carried no bag. But my keys, you ask? In my girlfriend's purse (Along with a couple more decks haha) |

I'm a huge fan of Bicycle messenger bags. I love the ones with lots of separate storage pockets, zip areas, mesh pockets on the sides, velcro flaps and pen and marker rings sewn in to hold them in place. (I have ordered them from ebay for as little as $10.00 and they've been pretty good for the most part). Army/Navy stores have great ones along the idea of the 5.11 Tactical gear, and the Army/Navy store has great, cheap prices. Hell, if it's the same gear that holds up in military situations, it should hold up to trasporting magic items. I bring the messenger bag with me to restaurant and walk around gigs and once I get there, drop my keys and phones into the bag, take out what I need, fill up my dress jacket, vest and pants and I'm on my way. I've brought my vests and both "blazers" to a dry cleaner who also does alterations and have had 2 pockets added to the inside of them all. Imagine if this was 1811 instead of 2011, we wouldn't have to worry about keys or cell phone storage at all...we'd just have to worry about being accused of witchcraft(although that still happens time and again. ; )

What I did was sewed about 15 pockets inside my jacket for cards, coins, rings, rope, a wand and other things. I also cut my pants on the outside of my legs to put in two hidden pockets. As for my keys and money, ( I don't carry a phone on me when I work ). I made a belt bag that goes on the small of my back to keep these things out of my way when I work.

I always carry with me a case, in this case it's everything (you can see that case here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=414860&forum=34&start=0). Yes the wallet, keys, cellphone, cards, ropes and so on. In most cases I preload this things at the gig. I enter always with this case, with my contact and name and the first thing I do it's find a place for it. No big deal here, always find one. It's not a case with an elephant or lion, it's something small and they always want help. I don't want my pockets full, everything I use it's distributed evenly for all pockets. I don't want them think that I have the pockets full of melons. So, the suit it's impecable and without pockets bursting at the seams. I use usually 4 decks (1 for improptum stuff, 1 for color changing deck, 1 for chicago opener and one with some set up, like the four aces on top.''I USE ONLY 1 OF THIS DECKS PER GROUP/TABLE'') a sharpie, the Greg Wilson wallet for Out of Lunch, a rope, a ring, some business cards, Gypsy Thread and sometimes for special tables, Chop Cup/ 2 lemons e Kennedy Box II ( These I use and immediately put in case). Usually I do about 1 hour with this and go reset ( in 5 minutes I'm ready for another hour).
It works for me.

That's an awful lot of stuff for an hour's magic.
When you are performing, leave everything you don't need out of your wardrobe. If security is an issue carry a lockable box with you. There is ALWAYS somewhere you can store your lockable box. Sometimes I put my "extras" in a bag under one of the draped serving tables. Nobody ever looks under those things. Other times, my goodies stay in my van. If there is valet parking, I either ask to park my vehicle myself or I take all the stuff that I don't want stolen into the venue. Go early. Learn to travel light. The longer you perform, the fewer props you will find that you need. Generally speaking, if you can't use it for more than one trick, it better be a great trick!
