I'd just like to introduce myself...I am 26 years old, pretty much new to magic and completely new to this website and forum.
I have been interested in magic for a long time and when I was young, I tried to find books that could teach me what I wanted to know to be an 'entertaining' magician. I have always lived in smallish country towns of no more than 10,000 people in Australia, and Library's and book shops did not have a large quantity of books available to even start learning the art of magic. Just a few weeks ago I stumbled accross "Ellusionist.com" while seaching for a 'test' video for my new Kyocera 7135 pda/phone that I had just got. This test video nudged this desire buried from my childhood to REALLY learn magic. I don't want to be an overnight success, but a magician that is suave and smooth and really makes people question "How did you do that?" while at the same time satisfy them by not wasting their time with quick tricks and eye candy, that just makes them want to go out and find out how I did what I did. Now I have read some posts and opinions of what people think of ellusionist.com and their videos and I don't want to start a debate or discussion on the rights and/or wrongs of their stuff. I will say without denying it, the videos helped me fall in love with magic all over again and even upped my skill level from zip... to something. My main problem was the times I did try to find books or videos on real magic, I somehow managed to only find information about "MAGIC THE GATHERING" card game... and thus gave up. I would like to know what books or videos, and from where, I should get to start off the "magician's" journey properly so that I could work my way up to actually being a talentent magician, instead of an 'overnight success and just as quickly forogotten' magician. I hope to find lots of help, as I don't know where else to turn now that I'm ready to really learn magic, but don't know where to get the needed information from to do so. Thanks in advance
If you're going to do something, do it well

Hello Elijah!
Welcome to the Magic Café! This is certainly the right place to come if you need help or have questions. There are many talented and experienced magicians here who will be happy to assist you (they sure help me enough!). You are right that there are many debates over the Ellusionist videos (I don't personally own any of them), but the people here are very friendly and I wouldn't worry too much about that. If it sparked your interest, good. BTW, I get it when you say that you can't run a search without 50 million posts for "Magic the Gathering" popping up. It happens to me all the time. I look forward to reading your posts. Emily B.

Hi Elijah,
The Café has a section called New to Magic, which offers valuable information on what books are suggested to help those to further pursue magic. It's a great forum. Actually a wealth of information at the Café on all topics. It will take a while to read it all but well worth it. So make yourself comfortable , grab a cup of coffee and welcome! |
