Night after night at the Magic Castle, I hear guests coming out of showrooms speculating on "how he did that". And that's a good thing. And of those many people, I'd imagine there's only one or two on any given night that actually might take the time to go home, search the internet, and discover the method. The question is -- who cares? The magician has already been successful at his job. He has entertained, he has fooled. In fact, he has fooled someone so badly that they feel compelled to find out the secret. And that's a good thing, actually.
Exposing the linking rings? Please... When I was 10 years old, I found a book at the local library that explained it. It seems that exposure is very high on the list of magician's concerns when, in fact, it should be near the bottom -- way below technique and showmanship. |

Rant continued. I know I saw a thread in this forum that tells you where to buy individual linking rings for other purposes, say a 10 inch ring that can be used for a small object levitation. I went to the site, bookmarked it, and now I can't find it. I hate getting old and forgetting where I put stuff. I stumbled across this thread looking for the link.
Now, the topic at hand. I guess if you can tolerate people like the masked magician, Valentine something, then I guess kids are going to follow what their elders are doing. I have an interest in a few effects and the first place I go to see if it is exposed, is you tube. I know the valentine character exposed zombie, I don't know if he did the linking rings. I got the three inch rings in a magic set when I was about seven. I know there are a lot of people out there who have never seen this performed and have no idea how it is done. To some of us, it is still a secret. After this long winded discussion I can get to my point. After watching the Naked Zombie DVD I was curious to see what model would be most suitable for doing the naked zombie. So I read through a bunch of threads here at the MC. In almost every one of them the gimmick and ball is exposed. It does not take a genius to figure out that a t***b t*p refers to a thumb tip. Yet we find these coded words all over MC - and sometimes coded words are not even used and we are told what the gimmick is and how it is used. A careful reading of a thread can often tell you more than a poor performance, or an outright exposure on you tube. My two centavos.

Actually, I have mixed opinions. When it comes down to it, the method is not the magic. Probably one of the largest components of the magic audience consists of people who already know how it's done. Imagine a magic convention attended entirely by non-magicians. The Linking rings are thousands of years old. I know how they work, yet Levent had me in tears at Magic Live.

In my eye, yes exposure is really bad and all that, but I don't think this has an effect on OUR audiences, yes young people trying to find out secrets is ripping off magic especially with the torrents e.t.c. nowdays. But I've never performed to someone who after the trick told me that he saw that trick on youtube. To be honest, its that 'masked magician' series that was on TV, that really annoys me, even sometimes I might show a card trick, where I make the card disappear, the guy says " Oh you're just using that magnetic ring from that TV show!" and I know that what he said is COMPLETELY the wrong method, yet he thinks he knows how the trick is done that took years of perfection....even though he actually DOESN'T figure it out......grrr...

Second that. And let's not pretend we never ever in out careers got caught while performing and thereby accidentally exposing a gimmick or a move. I'm not at all suggesting that it is the same thing as deliberately exposing a secret, the point is that a) The performance in itself is the main thing b) if someone in the audience knows the secret, there is not much you can do about it - no matter how he or she found out. c) If an audience member looks it up on Youtube or w/e afterwards, you've already had your success! No need to care about it. The element of surprise is also a huge part of the entertainment value in magic and I get more disappointed if someone tells me "oh, I've seen this one, the card will appear in your nose" than if someone blurts out "I know how it's done". The latter makes the person showing off look like an idiot, the former will make you feel like the whole point of the effect is lost. Just my 2 cents on the matter...

I am not really concerned if someone already knows how I am doing what I am doing. If they do, I can't change that - just try to entertain them. Most people, if they do know, will be polite and watch, and maybe comment after that they know the trick, but enjoyed the performance.
What bugs me is when I see someone performing in an informal setting, and some cretin interrupts the performance to be sure he let's everyone know that he knows how its done, and then proceeds to explain it with the performer standing there. Fortunately, that's something that is - mostly - limited to kids and extremely immature adults. Yes, there are ways to getting around/working through that, but the lack of common courtesy and respect can be galling, and a bit sad to see.

As you write, most people wants to be polite even if they have seen the trick (or even know the secret behind the effect). Disturbing and frustrating, sure - but just keep smiling and you will be the bigger man.
