If you were to describe the Perfect Any Card at Any Number, how would it go, and what would it look like?

It would look like this:
The performer would show a small red silk handkerchief, and poke it with his right forefinger into his clenched left fist. He would show his right hand empty, and then open his left hand to reveal that the silk had completely vanished. He would then immediately pass his hands out for examination, so as to prove that they were totally gimmick-free.

Beautifully put.
The perfect card at any number is the one that happens when I'm not there to endure it. |

Perfect ACAAN: Here's a deck. Shuffle it. Name a card. Name a number between 1 and 52. Count to that card. Voila!
Typical ACAAN: Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah (some in the audience have passed out) Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah And that's your card, correct? Yes it is. Can I go now? |

What is the magical effect of ACAAN? What power are you claiming, what is it you want people to believe happened? The perfect ACAAN would effectively prove that claim.

The Perfect ACAAN:
Someone accidentally calls you on the phone since they dialed the wrong number. You let them know that this could be a fortunate mistake on their part. You ask them if they have a standard poker or bridge deck nearby. You ask them to get it out and remove any ad cards or jokers. Have them shuffle the cards as much as they want. After they are done, tell the person to name any card in a standard deck. Then have them name a number from 1-52. Have them count down to one card less than their selected number. At this point, go over what has been done, and then have them turn over the next card. When they are done hyperventilating and screaming, let them know that Copperfield, Penn & Teller, Blaine, Angel and Dynamo are begging you to teach them that effect but you prefer to just let random wrong-number callers enjoy this magic. Thank them for their cooperation and end the call politely. |

ACAAN Lu Chen' did at EMC 2011 is a perfect one effect-wise.
But it is not a perfect one method-wise. Hideo Kato |

DelMagic's description is technically the "ideal", but you know what's odd? A trick can be TOO impossible. That is, if your test conditions are perfectly fair, I mean like Randi-proof, then more spectators will simply assume it was pure luck. I think there's a nice little sweet spot where to maximize the effect there has to be the possibility that you influenced or controlled the situation.
Unless you're one of those spectators who thinks that the supernatural is more likely than a 1/52 coincidence.
Michael Bluth: "So this is the magic trick, huh?"
Gob: "Illusion, Michael. Tricks are something a **** does for money." |

What do you guys think is the best ACAAN on the market? I have Eureka, The Berglas Effects, and John Born's "Meant to Be". From my experience I would say Meant to Be is the best. However, I would love to hear some other opinions.

I prefer to simply perform it as David Berglas does; fluidly. Never knowing exactly how the effect is going to proceed or even exactly what it will be until it's already begun. It's about what the audience perceives as having happened, not what actually happens. To be more hands-off I'll generally go with Asi Wind or Alain Nu's approaches.
However, my favorite hands-off method in this category is Greg Wilson's idea utilizing his Exact Change gimmick. In that same vein, I'm very fond of the old Harry Anderson idea from 'Wise Guy'.
It's all in the reflexes.

Barrie Richardson's impromptu ACAAN.
Barring that, there is another, and it's excellent. In light of this recent ACAAN resurgence, I'm not sure why it hasn't gotten very much attention. No gaffs, no sleights, plays big, and the performer never touches the deck. Go figure. |
