They had their pyramids but I can't live without flushing toilets!

According to Wikipedia, flush toilets date back to about 3000 BCE. Thomas Crapper merely popularised them.

I remember seeing the remnants of the plumbing system at Teotihuacan . . . probably 3,000 years old. I'm not sure they had actual flushing toilets, but they had running water flowing through channels in their homes.

Just checked on-line. There is an apparent toilet excavated at Teotihuacan. How it would have been flushed is unclear, it might have required the use of a bucket.

Flush toilets are nice, but hardly a necessity. It has never been more than mildly inconvenient to stay on property with outhouses or even to **** in the woods.
Now, spoons. We need spoons.

When I was a kid we had a comic book hero called Dick Tracy. His only advantage over criminals was his Dick Tracy wrist watch, which allowed him to have two way communications with police headquarters. This was an invincible crime fighting tool back in the 1950's.

I'd rather use an outhouse than a squat toilet. Or go in the woods. Ain't nothing wrong with going in the woods. Unless there are snakes. Not many snakes in Germany. Maybe there are in Spain and France. Maybe there's a connection. |

The ancient Greeks and Romans had a flushing toilet system.
Everybody pooped together though. That's a deal breaker for me. Randi |

Was there a schedule? Like for school lunches? This is fascinating...

Squat Pots are the worst! My body does NOT know what to do in that position. Japan still is rampant with them. After a certain age, it's a toss up whether you will c**p in one or fall in one.

Yes, Randi, you can see the remnants of a public Roman toilet in the excavated park at the Largo di Torre d'Argentina, near where Caesar was killed in the portico of Pompey's theatre. There is also a cat sanctuary there. At any rate, going to the toilet was apparently a more or less public, social event for the Romans, which the togat facilitated. According to our guide, sans paper, they shared a sponge on a stick dipped in vinegar'd water.

Now, the shared sponge. That's the deal breaker for me.

I dunno. Some people like that sort of think. I bet ten bucks there is a website dedicated to it. But I ain't gonna Google "vinegared sponge stick sharing fetish" tonight. I'll wait for it on the Donahue show.
