It was a passage or a line that rocked your world, inspired you, and forever changed your views about Magic.
What was it? How did it affect you? Please share it quote marks. Thank you!
"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes. |

A word of wisdom from Ormond McGill (that could be heeded by many on this board) and is not just about magic:

Dick Oslund started his lecture with "How much magic do you own?"
Several of us gave answers like "a closetful," "a trunkful," or "a warehouseful." He said, "you don't own ANY magic. You may own props, costumes and books, but you don't own any magic. Magic exists in the mind of the spectator when he experiences what you do with those props, etc."

Egad! I've used that lecturette in the lecture for eons! I am thrilled to hear that someone was listening!!! I'm embarrassed, I can't remember when and where we met. (Getting old is the pits, but it does beat the alternative.) I don't even know how I found your comment! I just "joined this show" and was "surfing" (I think that's the correct term)the web. This "It changed your life" popped up, and I find myself being quoted! I will need to buy a larger hat tomorrow. Thanks for your kind thoughts!

Hi Barry Allen! --and thanks for your kind words!
If I'm not careful,I'll have to get that new hat THREE sizes larger! Putting smiles on peoples' faces has been one of the objectives of my life. If I "succeeded" today, I am thrilled! When I did my first "real" show in October 1945 (I was almost 14 years old) I discovered that I could "make" people laugh. But, it took me awhile to realize how important that that "ability" was! For a couple of years, I had a lot of comedy in my little show. However, it seemed (to my adolescent mind) that the thing to do was to be suave and debonaire! Instead of a tuxedo, I bought "white tie and tails. I was doing a lot of "manipulation magic". I also bought a folding top hat and a Whitehouse Cane to Tablel! There I was, a skinny 18 year old bespectacled kid, trying so hard to be something I sure wasn't! At 19, I joined the Navy (in '51) and was stationed in Norfolk, VA. The fellows in the magic club (most of whom only did tricks with boxes and tubes, cans and pans and sticks with a bag on the end) thought that I was great. I had time off from Navy duties and I wanted to do shows. A local "vest pocket" agent set a "try out" date for me. It was a luncheon club in a restaurant. There was no place to change into the tails. There was no piano player. As a younger kid, I had talked and got laughs, but I was trying to be "swayve and deboner", and that didn't involve talking. So, I adlibbed lines and somehow got through the act. The audience, older businessmen, were very nice and I got a much better reception than I deserved. The agent said he liked me, but, "Can't you make 'em laugh?" I said, "I'm sure that I can, I just didn't realize that that is what they want." He said, "Make 'em laugh, and I'll get you some dates. I did, and he did! For the next four years,I made enough money in off duty hours that I never cashed a Navy paycheck. I sent the checks home! --And that's how I really got started in professional show biz! That agent had taught me a good lesson! "A laugh is worth a million bucks! --and it doesn't cost a cent!" Eventually, I also learned that, "If you meet a man without a smile, give him one of yours!" So, I "dumped" the tails and top hat! --I bought a tuxedo. I haven't "shut up" yet!

_The Amateur Magician's Handbook_ by Henry Hay changed me from being a dabbler in magic to being a serious student of the art. It gave me the background/core knowledge that I would need to communicate intelligently with seasoned professionals, and instilled in me a lifelong love of sleight of hand, what Hay called "hand magic." Even the glossary and the bibliography added immensely to my knowledge of magic and its history.

Max Maven's quote in his introduction to Focus left me reeling and changed the way that I perceived magic. Stephen Minch wanted Maven to leave out a simple four ace packet effect from the book that he believed was not up to the caliber of the rest of the material. Maven refused Minch's suggestion with this line: Indeed, in my opinion, no magic is trivial (although there are unquestionably performances that are).
