Great idea that of creating a separate section for reviews of mentalism stuff.
Better idea, perhaps, should it be moved to The Banquet Room (the area of the Café with restricted access forums where Inner Thoughts are). Not to restrict the access to people minus 50; nor of course to expose anything. Only to be sure we can talk freely in reviews without giving to lurkers and the general internet user unwarranted access to information which must remain restricted (Banquet Room is not googleable). Only a nightly preoccupation. Mr. Cassidy?

Yes, Danyel. I agree with you completely. (In fact, I think that Penny should be removed and merged with Inner Thoughts in the Banquet Room as well.)
Good thoughts, Bob |

Thanks, Tony. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but not always "less is more"

Thanks extended to all -if moves are to be done, of course I'll ask Mr. Cassidy, Tony, Paolo, Lior (=you, who are the experts, not me) to talk publicly.

Indeed Bob has it better than us.
But I can foresee his request is going to meet a lot of resistance by some here...

I disagree. With that logic, one might as well move all the review forums, mentalism AND magic, to The Banquet Section. And if one moves "Penny" down there, too, then in order to get in, one must post 50 or more times in the magic forums (AAARGH!!) On the one hand, I would like certain conversations private too, but one also has to be realistic.

I couldn't care less, because I rarely read reviews. But I still think we need a readers forum where we can discuss the real work without interference.

What sort of interference are you so (repeatedly) concerned about Tony?
If you are doing the 'real work' for entertainment purposes then there is room to discuss things here. Indeed there have been many, many threads where such discussions have taken place. If you aren't doing the real work for entertainment - then perhaps a magic and mentalism forum isn't quite the place for you - sub-forum or otherwise.

Interesting, Tony and Davit.
And, by the way -your opinion about the topic the rest of us are discussing here?

Well since you asked, I think the very last thing the Magic Café needs is more forums. Seriously - adding more forums would be right at the bottom of my list of things to do. The only way I could even contemplate it is if a new forum replaced FIVE others. In my opinion there are far too many here already which effectively makes the forum index unusable. I'd also start calling the forums by more descriptive names. "Mentally Speaking" tells you virtually nothing about a forums contents. "Mentalism Product Reviews" while not being poetic is fine.
Making reviews a 'secret' forums seems daft to me. How often do you see any significant exposure happen in review threads? It's often tough enough to even get purchasers to explain how an effect 'looks' lest their precious exclusive investment is devalued in some manner. If people need to review an effect while discussing the methodology in detail then they can always start a thread in Inner Thoughts. On that subject, I would code a link to Inner Thoughts from the top of the Penny and Mentally Speaking forum display pages. That way people can easily click to Inner if they have something sensitive to post and thus avoid the ghastly experience of forum index navigation. Many posters to this thread however are trying to have it both ways. You want a place to discuss mentalism with a large number of people - yet you don't want anything to be freely available. It doesn't work and it never will. If everything goes in Inner Thoughts then how would anyone find the forum? Well they might find it through word of mouth - but in that case you may as well just have a private forum. There are plenty of private forums - if that's what you like all you have to do is start posting there. Again, if it was me - I would make Inner Thoughts (and maybe the reviews too) google indexable but use one of those javascript 'content lock' devices that obscures the text for non-logged in users. This gives you nearly the best of both worlds - google indexes the page in full and the page will show for people googling relevant keywords - but to access the page they would need to log on and prove their worth in some rudimentary manner.

Privates are another thing: a community should be able to have a public (if reserved) place where to debate -and where everybody (entitled to!) can gather new information, along with new critical ideas. The main square of a XIX century european city vs. the literary salons of aristocracy, perfectly coexisting, but nevertheless very different in scope and aim. Quote:

Here I disagree. But -up to the more versed in information management. The 'prove their worth' is difficult, but interesting (mumble..), even if I see it very unpopular, and it poses many problems.. (who controls the controllers?). But let's talk about that. And, thanks for your ideas.

Well the system is already imperfect. Clearly proving ones worth is problematic - but at the moment all that is required is to make 50 posts. Again - if it was me I would ensure that users that currently did not have restricted forum access has their name printed a different colour in the posts that they make. Other members that DO have restricted forum access can then "vote" by clicking the users name, or some link beside it. When a user reaches XX many votes they are promoted to full access.
If a poster makes consistently thoughtful contirbutions that show they have a level of competence and knowledge of the art then they will reach 50 "votes" in next to no time. If a user makes posts that do little but demonstrate they are a rank amateur with next to no experience it will take them considerably longer. The idea of obscuring the text is also imperfect - the tech savvy will likely be able to circumvent it... but then anyone with some spare time can circumvent the 50 post restriction.
