George Hardy, a prominent English mathematician of the early 1900's, once made an off-hand comment that a particular area of math was so fertile that anyone could prove anything in that area. A bystander misheard Hardy's remark, thinking Hardy was boasting of his own talents that he (Hardy) could prove anything, in any area of mathematics. So the bystander challenged Hardy, "Oh yeah? Prove that you are the pope!" Hardy thought for a moment. "The pope is but one man. And I am but one. Therefore, the pope and I are one!" |
